OK guys first off please bare with me im new to the tuning game. I just recently baught dsmlink v3 and running speed density since i was running dsmap/jackel before. The last couple months my cars been down due to previous motor threw a rod bearing. So this time i spend a good decent amount of money into this new fresh built block! Finally finish the car all up and tonight i fired the motor up for the first time!!:hellyeah::hellyeah: Car sounds amazing with open 3 inch exhaust and 280! Car fired up tonight for the first time and notized my AFR were kinda rich around the 10,11 range and idle bounces up and down a bit. The idles pretty rough right now and kinda scared to keep it running like this with these rich afr. If you guys can please help me get this car idleing decent:hellyeah: I do not wanna wash out the cylinder walls with rich afr on this new motor.

I read threw this whole page a couple times on setting everything up on dsmlink i think i set everything up how its suppose to but not sure.

Thanks Brian. I've watched all the demo videos maybe even twice LOL. How do I post a log up so everones able to view it?

My injectors are 1150s on my injector they ingraved tested at 43.5 base fuel pressure. Now should I set my base fuel pressure on my motor to 43.5 or use the stock 37 fp? And witch ever one I would use I would just type that in on link right?

Personally I'd run 43.5 and adjust your global fuel accordingly. Your rough idle is likely VE adjustments as previously mentioned. Without a log it's tough say but you could try decreasing your deadtime to get your a/f in line.
 
Do you mean that your injectors were tested at 43.5 psi and the results show the deadtime you should run? If so, just know that the test was run on a universal test machine, and not one using a DSM ECU, so the numbers aren't accurate.

Best bet is to look at that number, as well as the recommended number on the DSMlink wiki site, and pick something around there. Then do appropriate idle tuning to solidify the number.


Sorry, the above is in relation to deadtime only.


If you're referring the the flow, you can plug the number into the Calculate feature on the Fuel tab in ECMlink, along with your fuel pressure that you're running, and the output will be the correct global number.
 
No preexisting base map, along with no experience in making one quickly, added to a new engine can cause some issues. Change your oil. Washing the cylinder bores with fuel, usually just means a longer time until maximum ring seal is achieved. Fuel contaminated oil causes much more immediate, and severe problems.

All new engines should be started on a known fuel map, weather it be stock, a previous tune on the same setup, or a decent base map.

Donnie I understand what your saying.

I'm gonna go ahead and install some stock 450s and run a 2g MAF.

Talked to Donnie on phone and he was saying there's a future with ECMLink that when running a MAF it will write a stock map so then when I wanna go back to speed density I'll have some stock maps to use. I've searched but haven't had any luck.

Anyone have any links leading to more information on would be awesome.
 
Use your 1150CC Injectors.

Install your MAF.

In the RPM/TPS tab set:

Target Idle: 900 Or whatever you like.

Launch Limit: Whatever you like. 4500

Rev Limit: No higher than 8k on stock valve internals.

Assuming you have a perfectly working TPS.

Adjust TPS settings however you like. Though if you don't have an idle switch select:

"Enable idle switch operation."
and
"Simulate idle switch from TPS."

This idle switch value on logs should be:

1 = foot off throttle.
0 = foot on throttle.


*If your TPS doesn't output 0% at idle and 100% at WOT you will need to adjust this.

You can do this without running the car.

Start logging with TPS added to the list of displayed parameters.

Give the gas pedal a full swing. You should see a rise from top to bottom of the log for the TPS.

Right click the log and select "TPS Adjust".

The RPM/TPS page will open. Just select "Save to ECU".

Go back to the log and verify the TPS is 0%

If not go back and lower "TPS Offset" by 1 or 2 more and save to ECU.

For the Idle switch. Once verified working you can remove it from the log to clear up the viewing area.

In the MAF Comp tab set:

Base MAF type: Stock

Click "Save to ECU"

In the fuel tab set:

Global Fuel: -61%

Deadtime: 330

Click "Save to ECU"

Now with the MAF installed and judging by the pop up headlights you need to set you fuel pressure to the stock parameters.

1G auto - Spec 42.7psi (Standard value 41 - 46 psi)
1G manual - Spec 36.3psi (Standard value 36 - 38 psi)

You can do this by turning on the fuel pump and setting your AFPR IIRC. That you hopefully have a gauge for.

Now that your Fuel pressure is set, MAF is installed and fuel is loosely defined. You should be able to start the car.

We want to log and capture the engine data.

Make sure you have a few things selected for logging/capturing.

FrontO2
MAF
MAFRAW
Airflow
AirflowPerRev
ThrotPos
Open Loop
Timing
IntTemp
ClosedLoop
KnockRet
RPM
CombinedFT
TPS Delta

Here comes the fun part. Start the car. Should idle decently but you can make adjustments if it doesnt.

First verify your RPM is at the desired speed. If not check your TPS again and make sure it is a 0% on idle. Adjust as necessary.

Now take a look at "AirflowPerRev". It should be at .25 for a 2.0l engine and .27 for a stroked engine. If not, because we know this is a solid standard value. We will adjust it to the designated .25/.27.

Look at your MAFRaw value in your log. Check the freq in Hz. Take note of that number. We will need it to adjust the AirflowPerRev value.

Go to the MAF Comp tab. Find the Hz range. 0 being first, 50, 100, 150 and so on. Select the range where the AirflowPerRev is too high or too low. Usually it will be the first two, 0 and 50Hz. If your AirflowPerRev value is too high, lower it and vice versa. A value of +-2.25% should raise or lower the AirflowPerRev by about .01.

Once you dial in your AirflowPerRev. You can move on to tuning the CombinedFT value.

You want it low. Not necessarily 0% but low 1-2%.

You can adjust this by adjusting the Deadtime for your injectors.

If your ConbinedFT value is a negative value. You will need to lower Deadtime If it is a positive value. You will need to increase your Deadtime value. Once you dial it in. You should be ready to use the MAFComp Adjust (CombinedFT) tool.

To access this, right click your log. There you should see it. But before selecting it. We need to change some things.

MAFComp Adjust (CombinedFT) only works in Closed Loop mode. So to utilize this tool to smooth out a larger spectrum of your map. We will alter the OpenLoopThresholds.

Simple to do. Though remember that this can cause issues with extended use. So you want to do this fairly quickly. 20 to 30 minutes of driving in varying conditions. Hilly areas are a favorite among most. But also city, and highway conditions.

You do not want to get on it too much. This isn't a race. The more time you spend on this the more changes can be made for you. But too much time with these settings changed can damage your motor. Heat, lots of it.

To get to OpenLoopThresholds click the "ECMLink" Info tab up top in ECMLink, then select "OpenLoopThresholds".

Start this process by altering your OpenLoopThresholds. There are three sections.

The first you want all values to be 1.4
The 2nd you want all values to be 1.4
The 3rd you want all values to be 50.2%

Once finished, click "Copy to ECU. you can now start logging.

Start the car and let it warm up. If it isn't already.

Drive around, Up a hill, down a hill. High gear and low gear. In general varying conditions. But remember, this isn't a race. Be moderate. Don't scare too many people.

Once you have finished driving around for a bit. You want to view your log.

Right click the log and select: MAFComp Adjust (CombinedFT).

It will make suggestions for your MAF Compensation.

Select "Use Template" and adjust the sliders to smooth out the map.

You can try to do this a few more times with different runs. Save your recommendations every time and adjust to smooth them out. After the 3rd time you should have a solid MAF Comp map.

Visit the OpenLoopThresholds page again and revert to stock. The can be done by clicking the back arrow all the way to the right in ECMLink while in the OpenLoopThresholds page.

Assuming you have already set up your ECU for MAP etc etc. Add these values to your captured values. SDRatio and MAP.

Once added double click SDRatio in the graph legend and enter your engine displacement. 2.00L

Verify your MAP sensor is set up correctly. MDP and select the version. GM 3/3.3 AEM 3.5/5 or Omni Power 3/4

Lets log!

Again drive in varying conditions. Take the same route you did before.

Once done, click you log and select "SD VE Adjust (SDRatio)".

You are done. Well, if you drive that route on a constant basis. You want to smooth out the SDRatio a bit in different areas. Play with the values and adjust them to your needs.

You can take that MAF off now too.

And, I said "Copy to ECU" and "Save to ECU" a lot. But not every time. And I don't feel like editing it. So when you change something. Copy/Save it to the ECU. It makes things work.

It's a lot more complicated that above. But this should get you set in the right direction. Good luck.

Very nice 92AWDtalonTSI Thanks for all the very helpfull information. Just have couple more questions for you.

1st: my car before was running jackel speed density program so I have my map and iat sensors tapped into the MAF plug harness. Is it ok to have them wired in this way with DSMLink?

2nd: the car right now has 100% e85 fuel in the tank. Do you think I should drain the e85 and just put 91 in it??

3rd: before with jackel I was able to just run my AEM UEGO wideband instead of the stock narrowband o2 sensor. So am I able to do this with DSMLink or do I have to install my stock o2 sensor back in place (Witch I would rather not do) cause as of right now only have 1 o2 bung welded into my exhaust.

1. Yes. You will use the Baro and IAT inputs for logging purposes.
2. I'd run the E85 if you can do it consistently, as it's much better than 91. Just make sure to compensate with fuel global settings (-41.6% instead of -61%).
3. Yes, v3 offers built in narrowband simulation.

Sorry just 1 more. Before on jackel I was able to use my aem ugeo wideband instead of my stock o2 to tune the car. Am I able to do the same with dsmlink?

For sensors:

IAT - Pins 8 & 24 on your ECU - No polarity so you don't need a specific wire to a specific pin.

Pin 8 being Green w/Orange stripe on ECU plug.
Pin 24 being Green w/Black stripe on ECU plug.

MAP - Pins 23, 24 and 15

Pin 23 being +5v Green w/Red stripe on ECU plug.
Pin 24 being - Ground, Green w/yellow stripe on ECU plug.
Pin 15 being # Sensor input Blue w/yellow stripe on ECU plug. This is the EGR Temp Sensor Input.


AEM UEGO - Pin 4 White on ECU plug. ** Look up O2 simulation.

Global Fuel: -61%
Injector size: 1150
Deadtime: 330
Stoich: 14.64
Gas Ratio: 1.0

For E85:

Global Fuel: -41.6%
Injector size: 771
Deadtime: Try this at like... 40/45
Stoich: 9.8526
Gas Ratio: 0.670

0.85 * 9.0078 + 0.15 * 14.64 = 9.8526 (Stoich E85 AFR is now 9.8526)


For E85 you need to calculate the injector.
Corrected Injector size:

Size * Gas Ratio = New injector size.

1150 * 0.670 = 771

Stock / Calculated new injector size - 1 = Global Fuel. Move the decimal over two to the right...

450 / 771 - 1 = -0.4163424124513619.... Or - 41.6%


You can use the AEM WBO2 sensor. You don't particularly HAVE to connect to the ECU plug. But this eliminates any faulty wiring issues some people may have. See if the sensors wired up now are where they need to be ^^ Posted above. I would check wire color and match it to the above colors and then follow it up with a Continuity check. Make sure there isn't a mix up with colors and pins.

If all is well plug in your E85 Data and tune as normal. Though I would suggest doing a bit of research yourself to understand fully the data values posted above.

so would i be ok with just running speed density setup how i have it. OR would i definitly have to run my stock 2g mass i have?

And right now i have my map and iat tapped into the maf plug witch means i have my map taped into my baro input. Is it ok do leave it like this or should i go ahead and use the egr input?

You don't have to run the MAS if you don't want to. Just know you'll have a bit more work building the SD table if you don't.

I'd leave the sensors wired as is.

Cool ill leave sensors wired up the way they are being they worked perfect as before.

My white wire on the aem wideband is wired up to the white wire on pin 4.

I wanna run a 2g mass being it will be alot easy to start off tuning for a begginer like me. but trying to find a way to connect the 2g mass to my 4inch inlet on my turbo's gonna be a little tricky LOL.
 
Once you figure out how to get the MAS attached, remember to unplug the sensors when using the MAS, otherwise you'll have issues. The ECU can't read two different signals coming through the same wires. Then once you get the SD table built, you can unplug the MAS, switch the input to Speed Density on the MAF Comp tab, and plug in your sensors again.
 
Yes, you'll be running MAFComp Adjust (CombinedFT) a few times fisrt with the MAS attached.

Followed by removing the MAS and running in Speed Density using the SD VE Adjust (SDRatio) tool.

These tools allow you to smooth out the map and expedite the tuning process. But by no means are these settings perfect. You will need to fine everything set to get your desired results.

There is a car currently on it's way up here to Illinois with a SD setup similar to yours. DSMap in it now I was told. Though I do have a 1G MAS I'll be doing the SD setup with ECMLink V3 Lite with only a 3 bar MAP and IAT sensor. I'll thoroughly document that and post up videos and a tutorial here on DSM Tuners. I'll also generalize the instructions I have posted here. Though all of the information on tuning is posted on ECMLink's website and included in their videos. I know when I started those were no help to me because I had no experience with the programs. It was like trying to explain calculus to a grade schooler. Like talking to a wall.

Most of the time you will have to change the settings someone tells you to use. Because every car acts a bit different.

So Tune tune tune tune tune. Double check settings you have changed. And you should have a strong tune.
 
Nice man. That would be so awsome if that car heads up there and your able to do all that!!

I can try to get a 1g mass instead of my 2g if that would help things out better. Just figure with the higher compression piston 8.7.1 i have installing the 2g mass maps would have been little better.

Wounder if someone local would be willing to trade me for my 2g mass for the 1g.
