HEY GUYS I NEED MY CAR UP AND RUNNING TON SO PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is the deal, today i decided to clean my engine bay, sprayed engine cleaner on all parts except electrical, then started car before rinsing with water, well while i was wiping everything down the towl i was using got caught in the cam gear, so i ran as quick as i could to turn the car off.

Well after i got the cloth out around the cam gear i went to start the car up and it will sputter for a few then quit.

ran a diagnostic and this is what i got

PO340 Camshaft position sensor A
circut (bank one or single sensor)

What does this mean?

I have a 2G. What could that towl have down it just went around the cam gear did not stop the motor, HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

:sosad: :sosad:

what i mean is how do i put the timing back to wear it should be or how do i check it to make sure it IS out of timing

When a 2G pops that CEL is that what it means, what i am saying is is there any way that sensor got damged.

thks

i dont see how the sensor could be damaged. check here
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G.html
Look at this pic. on both the cam gears, the when at TDC (top dead center) both the dowel pins need to be up, and both the notches in the cam gears need to be straight accross, extremely straight, like w/ a ruler. cant be very much off AT ALL.

maybe this will teach you to not clean it while the engine is running, what if it was ur shirt that got pulled in there. bad news huh.....
true, but i think he just forgot to move the rag away when he started it.

Also, check all your misc. electrical plugs and connections. maybe when you used the power washer in your engine bay it blew a plug or something off or loose. Check your base timing too w/ a timing light, then we can go from there.

hey sorry it took me so long to reply, but i just got back from a 5 day training evolution, concerning the USMC.

Anyway, I checked the cam gear timing, and I was off like 3 cogs, so i went ahead and took off all acc. belts and pulleys and crank pulley and but everything back to TDC and went ahead and put the cam marks back to wear they should be and without putting the acc belts and pulleys back on, tried to start the car.

I was able to get her running for maybe 3 sec and she quit, so i went ahead and checked my logger, it popped the same code as before

po340 camshaft position sensor A circuit
(Bank one or single sensor)

So I went ahead and checked for cylinder one to be TDC, which it is, so I then looked @ the sensor again and I came to find that the rag must have snapped it and bent the sensor back against the Engine Block, :notgood: , so it appears that I need a new sensor.

I need to know how to replace this sensor, and which type of this sensor I need.

Called my local parts shop and they told me there are 3 diff kinds of this sensor fro the 4G63 2.0 turbo engine .

car is a 96, but not original motor, however it is def a 7bolt 4G63 turbo, help me out here, what do i need to do??????

well it only jump 3 cogs on the cam gear.......dont beleive it bent anything......took the cam gear off today and found that the sensor was bent in half, back towards the engine block like i predicted !!!!!........would explain the CEL.

You've got to be kidding me!!! A few weeks back I was cleaning my throttle body and I got a rag caught in the cam gears. Dude... We suck... Anyway, I saw that I jumped two teeth and so I fixed all of that... My car ran the same way, ran for 2-3 seconds in "limp mode" and then died. I found out that my Cam position sensor was bent backward, and my "Hall Effect" wheel was damaged as well. Sooooo, when your ordering up your parts, you can find the Cam Position Sensor from a lot of different places, but if you bent your "hall effect" wheel (the backing plate on the back of the intake cam gear), which inevitably you did, you need to order the intake cam gear through the dealer and it will come with the wheel. Hopefully it works out for you...

Oh yeah... You said you were cleaning your engine, and I was curious if you did throttle body cleaning like I did. Reason being, I sprayed a bunch of cleaner in there and since my "rev out the throttle body cleaner" process got cut short :)coy: stupid, stupid, stupid :coy: ) when I tried to start it up after everything was fixed, there was residual cleaner and nastiness that made it run horribly, as if I didn't fix the problem... So, if you did, keep in mind that your going to have to try to rev it out a little before it will run properly...

no shit man ........that is crazy, would you happen to have a pic of your damaged backing plate so i can complare it to mine, mine does not appear to be damaged!

However my sensor was bent backwards!!!!!

I'll try to post one up in 10 minutes or so... It would probably look broken if it was broken, but I'll let you see mine to compare...

Sorry about the quality, its a camera phone. You can see the bent fins and a little of the chewed edges. It seems to be a fairly delicate piece of the cam position system, because the piece wasn't HORRIBLE, but my car wouldn't run in its condition.

damn dude that sucks, i compared you pics to mine and mine does not even appear to look like that @ all, i guess my rag wrapped around differently or something

who knows......but i really appreciate it !!!!!!!!!!

Ok i put my car back into time, as far as lining up the cam gears, crank pulley and oil pump. Also, I installed a new upper camshaft sensor as well, due to the fact that mine was destroyed. Without accessories, I attempted to start the car, engine runs, however it will not idle, and it is running rich or @ least something is coming out of the exhaust, black smoke, with blue tint @ tiimes. This could be caused by several different factors, because the engine has been sitting for 2 weeks.

I have checked the plugs, they were caboned up, so i cleaned then reinstalled, no change in running.

I then checked each plug for spark, all plugs are getting spark, made sure plug wire was on right plug, no change.

Above someone stated about the possablility that i may have bent a valve, even though the cam gear jumped three cogs and I do not beleive anything was bent, I decided to do a compression check

180 across the board within a variation of like 5 psi per cylinder ie. 175 and 185. Is this within spec. Waiting till my dad gets home to perform a vacuum check.

Are they any other ideas of what can be wrong.......please help!!!

Also, I want to check my ignition timing..................but i am completly clueless how to do this.

I checked vfaq, and all there shit is for a 1G, considering what i have read, it says you CANNOT adjust the ignition timing on the 2G, OK  , then if it is out how are you supposed to change it

Also it seems I cannot get my timing light to work, I followed the directions exactly..can someone please tell me how to do this on a 2G step by step, because this is my last hope what is wrong before I begin to think there is something inside the engine that might be wrong.

thks , tyler

umm not sure of the name of the timing light, but it is the type you put neg on neg, pos on pos on the battery, you put the thing that picks up the spark on #1 plug wire, and then you have the gun itself. I tested the light out on my dads truck and it works fine, but maybe i am not doing something on my car that i need to.

I also need to know if the 4G63 is a precision type or interferance type motor, pertaining to the head and valvetrain.

Hey, glad to hear that at least your Cam Sensor Wheel plate isn't damaged... On our cars, you can't adjust the ignition timing unless you install a 1g CAS, as our ignition is controlled by the ECU. The only thing we can do is ground the "ignition timing plug" thingy (next to the throttle body) which will set the car back to its base timing settings. Your ignition timing is probably fine, unless something went wrong in the ECU. Your CAM timing may be off, though. Did you recheck your timing marks after your car turned off this last time? How is the car "idling?" Does it idle for a couple seconds and then die? Because that is the EXACT same thing that happened to me when the EXACT same situation occurred with me. So, if the timing marks check out and you know everything is back together correctly, try running it for a longer amount of time. My car needed to be ran for AT LEAST 10 minutes to get all of the 2-3 week sitting gunk out of the engine, just to get it to IDLE on its own. Again, though, I did the carb cleaner right before mine died. But still, I'd try to run it to clean anything that might be in there out, and keep it at a high idle (put your foot into it to keep it at 1500 rpm or so) for awhile and see if it gets any better.

thks for the reply man, really appreciate it, today i will let it run for 10 min or so @ high idle and see what happens, hopfully that is all that is wrong,, I checked, checked again, and rechecked my timing on the cam gears, camshaft pulley, and oil pump once before i started it up for the first time, after i started it for the first time with no accessory belts on and then again after the accessory belts were on. But i will check again today.

anybody else is welcome to throw ideas out to me.

thks, tyler

Ok guys i went out today and helped tyler with his car. and i have called cragger at slowboy tring to figure this damn thing out. as of right now all the timming was right. it wont idle worth a shit but if you give it gas it will pull fine to redline. it is all so making a very loud ticking noise i thougt at first it was a valve ticking but the more i listened to it, it wasnt hallow like a valve tapping it was solid. when i talked to cragger he suggested maybe a crushed lifter, does anyone else have any suggestions? WTF
