UPDATE TIMING BELT OFF...can't hand crank or start (valves hitting pistons?)

I think I really may have messed something up.
I'm new to DSM's, bought one at a great price that just needed an oil pump. Anyhow, the exhaust cam timing wasn't right in relation to the intake, so I tried to get that as close to the intake as well (cam sprocket dowels lining up...).

Well, now being the genius that I am, I put everything back without trying and hand cranking, etc. Timing belt went back on.. cover, pullies, etc. Couldn't hand crank it past s certain point. wouldn't stat either. could go to that point where I could hand crank it to and stop.

Now before you go telling me I'm an idiot, trust me I know. :( This is my first venture into DSM's, I've owned 2 F-bodies previously. Probably valves smacking the pistons, not allowing further rotations, right? Should I just put the exhaust cam back where it was after I take the timing belt back off?...

thanks for any help.

Sorry about that :p
It's a 93 TSi AWD model.

Is there a way to tell on the crank sprocket where TDC is? I belive I can line up everything else that goes on that belt, but when I took the crank pully off, it about took the sprocket too :(

SO I just need to line up the cam sprockets, get the oil pump sprocket to its mark..and find TDC?
any way to do that (tdc)

again, I really appreciate the help.

Just curious, what IS the probablity that I really screwed something up, as in, bent valves? I know the starter is capable of it, and I tried to crank it over 3-4 times.

Kinda like rockhound in Armageddon "it'll be fine" "what makes you think that?" "because if it's not, we're screwed!"

Invest in a mitsu shop manual. In it it will show you the timing marks and correct alignment procedures. Make sure the timing belt is replaced.

Good Luck

Well, I'm hoping you didn't mess anything up but I did the same thing with mine the very first time I put it together. When you used your starter to crank over, you didn't hear anything unusual (like a crack/snap)? If you didn't, chances are you don't have broken valves but you may still have bent one. I would suggest you take the head off and take a quick look at the valves to make sure they are seating right and to make sure you haven't scored the piston. Good luck.

What i did, because you cant see the timing mark for the crank without the timing cover on. Is take the spark plugs out stick a long screw driver down the hole of the #1 cyl. and turn it over till you find TDC. If you cant get it to TDC then take the timing belt back off and move things by hand until it does get there. Re-set the cams to their marks and try again. I probably dont have to say it but dont force anything. If you did bend a valve you might still be alright. Compression test. Your numbers on a newer good motor without bent valves should be up in the 160 to 180 area. Anything at or below 125's would mean time for a head rebuild. Good luck

I've got everything lined up (are cams supposed to be somewhat difficult to turn with no timing belt on?)...

Anyhow, I STILL cannot get the crank back to TDC.
I don't understand it. Nothing really changed since the waterpump, just moved the cam sprocket closer to in time with the other cam... now it won't crank all the way over?
... Is it possible... that you can't hand crank all the way, (because it stops at a certain point going backwards too, not the same point), could the battery be low??

help...

I noticed the intake cam had a little play in it...the exhaust cam...dang i smashed a finger moving it... :thumbdown

spark plugs out, trying to remove some resistance.

gets to tdc, click click click....

move it back, and it actually offers resistance now... gets to TDC and click click click.
I'm stumped.

Does the clicking happen when you turn it over with the starter? If so, I'd suggest you shine a flashlight into each of your cylinders and check for valves. Ask me why I bring this up....

Dude Im sorry to tell you that you gotta take it all apart now. That does not sound good at all. Time to head down to the parts store and pick up at minimum, a head gasket cause your gonna wanna take the head off. And start looking for a set of valves to your liking aswell. Good luck looks like more down time! :p
mike

Make sure you align all four cam markers using a straight edge. Very important. You might think the two inner markers are lined up but if you check with the striaght edge against all four you might find that they are not.
