i searched the forums but couldnt find anything on piston to valve clearance. i know how to do piston to valve on small block chevys, but thats a totally different motor, thats a pushrod type motor.

so how do i do it on a 4g63 ? there is only one type of lifter that i know of and thats hydraulic.

so i had to rebuild my motor because there was a blown piston. and as i pulled the pistons i saw the intake valves tapped the pistons, but not bad. my compression on all cylinders was 160psi except #2 which had 0 due to blown piston.

1: saw on the adjustable intake cam gear was retard by 4 degree and those were the valves that tapped.

2: the hydraulic tensior piston was broken.

took my head to a machine shop and there wasnt any bent valves. found out the head was machined down to its max.

i have .20 over stock pistons w/ HKS 272 intake & exhaust cams w/ HKS springs & ferrea stock sized valves with a cometic head gasket.

also just got the block back from the machine shop, they had to deck it. wasnt that bad out spec but they had to deck it a tiny bit.

hit or no hit ?

You do know that dsm's are interference type engines right? (Not like Chevy)
"Interference" = valve goes into area where piston travels so timing belt better not be more than 1 or 2 teeth off or bent valves or damaged pistons.

i know that already, i just want to know how to check piston to valve clearance so i determine if i have to get my pistons notched or not.

also ive done the timing on these cars alot. its not getting dead on that im worried about, it's that i wanna make sure i check the piston to valve clearance before i put the engine in the car. i have HKS 272's so there is a chance i could hit the pistons. i duno if it will or wont since the head & block have been decked, thats why im asking for help on checking clearance.

Go to a local auto shop get a cheap, thin, headgasket. Clay the top of your pistons assemble your motor, put on the timing belt, rotate the engine. Take everything back apart and see if there is contact.. Thats what i just did....Hope it helps
