hey, i just bought my laser, and im in the process of fixing everything and trying to get it to run as well as possible...

so, what ive done in the last 2 days are as follows:

changed spark plugs
reconnected BOV to intake instead of venting to atm
removed throttle body, cleaned (also cleaned ISC while it was out)

i hooked everything back up, and im not getting any more idle surge like i was before, and it doesnt buck and run reeeeeeally rich between shifts, but now i have a considerably louder whine coming from my turbo... im pretty sure its not a leaking hose, but i wont rule that out...

any ideas? maybe its supposed to sound like that and i just dont know b/c ive never had a turbo before, but i want to make sure.... it is running a lot better since i cleaned the throttle body out, but i want to make sure nothing is wrong... thanks!

my 2G whines.. or hisses.. or something.. above 3k or so when i'm building boost... i questioned the noise and was told it was fine..

i couldn't hear it with the stock air filter.. but as soon as i put my K&N on i could really hear it... and the BOV

I dont know what you mean by whine. When I put my UICP and new intake on I could really hear my turbo. When it spools it sounds kind of like a airplane engine starting up. If thats your sound I think its normal.

Mine just started making some noise too. At about 7psi it whines or squeeks. Almost sounds like a belt slipping?

How do you check the shaft endplay?

Pull the intake off of the turbo (WHILE ITS COLD!!) and look inside of the turbo. You'll se a shaft with the compressor blade on it. That shaft is what you are looking to be checking. Go ahead and stick your fingers in there and move the shaft up and down to check for wobble and pull it in and out to check for play. Neither one is good. A little bit isnt horrible, but if you can move it to touch the sides of the compressor wheel then its no good. Also, check for oil inside of the turbo. If there is any then you most likely have a turbo with bad seals. Good luck!

Does the exhaust smoke when you are under boost? If so then its burning oil = turbo is shot. Your probably not used to the noise. You should still check for shaft play.

I'm not sure if my turbo is whining. This is what's happening. I've had my car for a couple of months and this is the first I am noticing of this noise. It's a 91 GSX, that is basically stock.

At exactally 7 psi of boost it starts making this noise. It sounds like the noise a ziptie makes but louder and climbs with the boost until I hit max boost (12psi? I have just the stock boost gauge.) It does not make this noise until 7psi of boost.

I took the intake pipe off and felt the compressor wheel. It will spin easily and will not move otherwise (no determinable play). It did not feel excessivly oily, although my intake tube (the stock plastic thing) felt very grimy/oily. I figured this was because of the stock pcv valve. I attempted to do an intake leak test but the only place I hear air escape was from the bypass valve to the intake?

Anyway, any feedback you folks can offer will be helpful at this point. Thanks.

I don't know if it was the bypass valve the air was leaking from. It was the small vacume-looking hose that goes from the turbo to the turbo to the intake. I didn't hear air leaking from anywhere else in the intake track.

yea, thats definitely not the case... ive got plenty of boost and the car is still running fast as ever...

Maybe its just the good ol turbo doing its work?

My 16g whines. Its very loud. I have a hardpipe intake and k&n filter though, so that could be why.

Its very loud, very noticeable. If you have no shaftplay, and its not leaking oil, i think you're ok. :thumb:

okay mine is very loud and it does sound like the turbo but when i got it all together i didn't sound that way for about 3 miles then i made that noise. explain that one.
