turbo trouble shooting....high pitch whining

ok, i just brought my car to get a new clutch installed after my last one went...i got the car and at first the turbo would not work and after 2800 rpm the turbo would whine but the turbo would not kick in...i brought it back immidiately and told them that they messed up the turbo somehow and to fix it...he called me the next day and told me it was done and all he had to do was replace a vacume line...so i took it home, now the turbo kicks in at the right rpm and i can tell its working but there is not the same amount of boost and it still whines like crazy...plus the blow off isnt half as loud as it used to be...the whining sounds kinda line a supercharger whine if i could compare it to anything...but i have no idea whats wrong with it.it is the stock TDO5H, the only thing i can figure is that the turbo finally went,its the origional turbo and its a 90, its just a little messed up that it started as soon as they were done with it....this shit sucks....
 
Sounds like your bearing went out and the impeller is making contact with the housing, if it's not making as much boost as before thats most likely the problem. Time to get a upgrade turbo
 
yeah thats what i figred on...its kind of funny the whining actually sounds pretty cool...aside from the car driving shitty....i was thinking of going with a 16g...how are these turbos for an upgrade and whats the differece in power output between a small 16g to a big 16g?
 
the whinning was cool until you have no more turbo. i have a b16g its great i have to get more stuff to get the hp
 
I'd go with the evo III 16G. It's pretty cheap as far as upgrade turbo's go and i believe its capable of 375-425bhp. It's flows more than a big 16g but it still spools almost like stock. I noticed a huge difference when i upgraded from my stock turbo even at the same amount of boost.
 
sorry to bring this back up, but i am having the same issues, but my car is still buiilding boost, and no ill effects yet. the weird thing is, a friend of mine is having the exact same issues, except his turbo (t3/t4 hybrid) was just rebuilt by turbonetics 300 miles ago. he is boosting about 20psi on it. mine is only hitting around 9-10 psi. I checked my intake impeller and it spins freely and there is no visible damage. no shaft play or bent fins either. im confused :(
 
wow i havent been on the board for a couple years, my gsx was to costly. so i bought a grand prix gtp. but from what i can remember is that it was the turbine making the noise. you might want to have someone who deals with turbos check it out.
