So I go to change one gasket. And lo and behold the stud strips out of the 7cm EVOIII O2 housing. So I try to tap it, get about 1/2 way done and realize it's just boring the hole out (I guess it's just pulling loose the metal left from the stud). So I guess my questions are:

1) Is it possible to remove the turbine housing without pulling the turbo? (2G) I see there's a vfaq for the 1G, just not sure if it applies due to spacing.

2) Is there anything a machine shop can do with this thing? And is it really reasonable or better to just get a new housing?

3) Is there a place other than Forced Performance to buy the EVOIII housings from? As much as I'd like to dump $225 plus shipping into my sub $500 turbo, they have to be around somewhere for cheaper. Even MachV's price is lower for the standard 7cm housing.

Thanks for your help guys.

You should be able to do it in a 2G as well.

They or you can use Holi coil inserts or just enlarge the hole a little, get a longer bolt then secure it with nut and washer.

Cool.

Didn't realize you could do a helicoil yourself. Any idea where you can purchase whatever is required? As for the longer bolt idea, I was thinking that, but have been unable to locate a long enough bolt.

I'm not that familiar with the subject of helicoil but I'm sure if you do a search, you should find your answer. Good luck.

I pulled my turbo out today while leaving the O2 housing on but it does seem possible to do the oppsite. You might have to remove the air exit to the intercooler and the big hard line in the back of the housing...i'm pretty sure it's the oil return. Just make sure you get the right angle to pull the O2 housing off the turbine, you dont want to mess up those blades.

p.s. http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html is the truth

It cost me $50 to have a machine shop helicoil the 4 turbo-to-manifold bolt holes and resurface the turbine housing gasket mating surface. Well worth not ruining a perfectly good housing myself.

I dont need a new o2 housing, its the turbine housing thats stripped. And yeah, I would rather have a machine shop do it, though Im pretty good at stuff like this and could handle it if I had to.

As for getting it out, I already had the manifold out, so I was able to pull the heat shield and disconnected the dp, and popped the v-clamp and lifted the turbine housing and o2 housing out as one peice pretty easy. I just secured the rest of the turbo with speaker wire to my strut tower brace to keep the weight off the oil drain line.
