tsi keeps killing turbos!!!

Ok so I have a 90 tsi awd.some of you may remember my post about a month ago asking why I may have smoked my new evo 3 16g.well I got another 16g,great condition,barely used,minimual shaft play.(also I took apart my blown 16g completely.although I am not an experienced turbo rebuilder,I see no blue shaft to indicate lack of oil,nor is there oil everywhere to indicate blown seals so I still have no clue why it died.chewed up compressor blades is all I found)now,I used new oil feed line,new a/n return line.I get plenty of oil out of the feed port.650 miles on the replacement 16g now and it has so much shaft play I give it a week of use left.now once again,could anyone give me any pointers as to why this may be happening?I ran this replacement at no more then 18psi?(current mods are in profile)compressor surge maybe?I'm out of ideas and can't keep replacing turbos every 1k miles.any help is greatly appreciated.
 
well here are a couple questions are you using a filter on you oil feed line? is your turbo ported? is there metal shavings in your oil? Just trying to think of some things that might be causing this.

also there is a fp 20g in the classifieds for $450
 
Well I have no oil filter on feed line.didn't know there was such a thing,but next time ill be feeding from the ofh so I would like to know more about it.as for shaving I put a new pan and oil in motor at the same time as the replacement 16g so I doubt it had contamination.also ill look into that 20g as soon as I can locate these classifieds everyone tells me about
 
Idk about too much oil because I'm using a stock oil line which has the restrictor in it.but I have no b shafts so idk.
 
The first was authentic mhi.the second was ebay becasue I got it barely used on a trade,and my car is dd so I had no choice but to get it back on the road
 
ebay 16gs have the highest rate of failing thats your problem with that one.i had a mhi 16g on my last dsm and i ran 18psi for ever i ran the shit out it LOL.with all stock oil lines and till this day has been through two owners and still wokrs like a champ no smoke or shaft play so your best bet would probly be getting your real 16g rebuilt by a professional with real 16g parts.it shouldnt fail again for a while.mine had almost 30k on it when i bought it for 50 bucks guy didnt know it waas a 16g so i got lucky LOL. but it worked great.
 
So maybe I was pushing the authentic 16g too far?I got maybe 1500 miles on it,but it had horrible creep,and would always spike past 20 psi any time I got on it.also does anyone know if the mitsubishi td05 "20g" compressor wheel on ebay wil fit in my 16g housing?

I dont think you were pushing it too far at all.I have been running 22psi for thousands of miles now with no problems.
 
There's no way a head feed can either over-oil OR under-oil a TD05H turbo; these turbos are designed to be fed from the head. I'd be more concerned for failure with your attempt to feed them from the filter housing, although you did mention using a restrictor so you're headed in the right direction.

Are you positive that there's no evidence of metal making it to the turbo? It honestly sounds to me like some type of contamination in the oil supply. Lack of oil would show bluing on the shaft or scoring of the bronze journal bearings on the shaft.

One thing's for certain- if you don't get the problem figured out you might as well get used to changing turbos because if you lost two in a row to a similar failure, you're going to lose another...and another.

Boosting to spike past 20psi?

I LOL'd at 20psi on my Evo III 16G. I ran 28 PSI on that turbo for at least two years. Way over it's efficiency range, but I ran 11.79's on boost only! LOL. It did eventually give up the ghost though, blew the seals right out of it. I think that was from running hard then shutting down without a turbo timer though.
 
Well contamination has to be it.I used new feed and return lines.it gets plenty of coolant.anyone know anything about these oil line filters?and also my bov fluters at low to mid throttle.anyone think its surge killing them.
 
well it could of just been a fluke, the 1st one could of been showing its age when you put it on, then using a ebay one, they can last a day to a month you never know.

as far as the 20g wheel, yes it will go on the center cartridge but you need a td06 housing
 
Well the mhi was new when I installed it,and most people tell me the ebay turbo failure is probably just bad luck.I really don't wana risk another to find out though.

Oh need a evo 316g compressor wheel if anyone is looking to sell one in good condition
 
I didn't see compressor surge as a possible cause of failure. Though I am not well versed in this area maybe someone can shed some light on the damaging affects of compressor surge.

Have you checked for proper operation of your BOV? Maybe it's stuck closed or not opening enough to keep the boost pressure surge from hitting the turbo's compressor wheel when the throttle plate closes.
 
Excessive compressor surge can absolutely kill your turbo. The forces on the shaft from the air attempting to back-spin the compressor wheel can force the shaft to contact the journal bearings no matter how much oil pressure the turbo is getting.

A buddy of mine unknowingly blew the BOV vac line off right at the BOV and drove his car like that for about a week. It took me in the passengers seat hearing the BOV popping much louder and longer than normal and at higher boost levels to question how long it had been going on, to which he claimed "about a week". The turbo had noticeable up/down shaft play after that happened which wasn't there the last time the car was at my shop. So in just a week's time, there was noticeable play from excessive surge under daily driving conditions.
 
That's what I'm talking about,thanks guys.compressor surge.I knew other then contamination,lack of oil,or too much pressure ect,compressor surge kills turbos also.I have a dodge modded bov I got from a friend.it flutters at low/mid throttle and holds boost on leak test.its run from the intake vac line with no t.
