ok my car keeps killing belts i have tryed 5 different brands of belt and i am somewhat new to mechanics so any help would be great ok the problem is i put a new belt in drive for 20 - 30 minutes then all of a sudden the belt starts to squeek and its lose so i tighten it and this keeps happening till i cant tighten the belt anymore and it just eventually falls off

what engine? did you check alignment of the pulleys?

a misaligned pulley will eat a v belt making it loose... since only 1gs have v belts if you have a 1g this might be a possible thing to check

I hope your not talking about timing belt... Which belt are you talking about would be helpful for someone to help you.

Couple more thoughts on this, crank pulley balancer rubber has started to break it's bond. This can usually be seen while the engin is running and the pully will be wobbling. Though rare the hub center can break.

If this is a stick shift and there is a need to check the center bolt tightness then put the car in top gear set the emergency brake and now tighten the bolt in a clockwise direction. Do not try to rotate the engine backwards for they can jump time.

When you install a new belt are you adjusting the tension by the factory specifications or just guessing?? Do make sure all pulleys are in line and none are canted at an angle.

Cheers,
GTM

I second this.

and i didnt actualy install the timing belt someone else did he tured out to be a complete moron so i bet he just threw it on there

could the crank pully wobbling be causeing my car to shake at idle? it balances itself out when i hit the gas and stops tho ..

Hmmmm, yes and no it depends... hows that for a non response. :) It's whole purpose is to reduce vibration but if it's coming apart it can cause things to be worse. This as previously mentioned can usually be seen with the engine running, however, by pulling the wheel, splash liner, and the car properly on jack stands you can observe this a lot better from below. Your eyes don't get tricked with so many moving parts. You can just look at the relationship between the pully and the timing belt cover while it's running. With it turned off you can try with hands or light lever pressure to see if it flexes. Look at the small rubber bead that is vulcanized to the inner hub to the outer pulley. Should not have any ruptures, delamination, etc.

I toss out another question, crankwalk??

I'm a bit concerned about some of the prior repair history and would like to have you do a compression check if you have not already done one???

Did you reply to how you were adjusting the belt and I didn't see it??

Cheers,
GTM
