i have a 98 spyder and when i come to a sudden stop the car doesn't want to go into a false neutral like it does when you stop...its like its stuck in first gear and i have to put it in neutral. if i shut the car off and turn it right back on the problem goes away and it shifts perfect. someone said it was a lock out selinoid or such....are these on the outside of the transmission where i can replace them without having to pull the tranny? someone also said reset something but not sure...any help is appreciated or if you need more info please let me know

What is a "false neutral"?

Does it stall when coming to a stop?

it trys to it will drop under 1K rpm and the whole car will shake unless i put it in neutral...it won't stall just sit there and do that. but if i turn the key off and restart the car it acts fine until it decides to do it again which leads me to think its something electrical

Try what this link says....from what i read, it seems like the keydance you do for regular ecu codes....but instead for the tcu.

I have almost the same exact problem and am not sure yet if it is the computer relearning itself b/c the car was apart for almost a month, or that my tcu is somehow messed up.

Checks for vacuum leaks were done....the idle speed control motor was replaced and I saw a lil improvement but it didn't fix the problem either.

Let me know what you find....and good luck. This problem is annoying to have so i hear ya on this.

seems like i am getting this code...hard to tell since my volt meter is digital but i believe it is this 21 Open-Circuited Kickdown Servo

**update**

i hooked a regular test light to it and it is giving me steady flashing pulses so i am assuming it is saying nothing is wrong. will it show codes if something is wrong even if the car is acting right?

A good way to check codes is to pick up a 12 volt buzzer from Radio Shack. In this manner you can listen for the pulses, rather than trying to see them on a digital volt meter.

Also, keep in mind, the flashing method doesn't always work correctly and you may need to actually hook the car up to a scanner for an accurate diagnosis.
