Well i cant find the answer to my question with the search feature, so I decided to ask around before i tear apart the tranny. In my haynes manual to remove the TOB it says to simply detach the fork from the ball stud and then pull the bearing off but I've tried and tried to do this and couldnt.

I tried using a pry bar to pull the TOB off the sleeve and it actually started to move the input shaft off the sleeve and this made me think that there should not be a "lip' on the input shaft sleeve.

I've attached pictures of the lip and sleeve that I'm talking about and I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction as about what to do? Is it possible to replace the sleeve? If so, should i take my tranny to shop and pay them to replace the sleeve or is it DIYable? My friend seems to think we can simply pull the sleeve off but i would think that it would be a little more complicated than that.

Also if someone has a part number for the sleeve that would help out alot because the last time i went to the dealership without a P/N they ordered the wrong dowel pins and gaskets.

I have never seen a sleeve for the throwout bearing. It looks as the bearing is cutting away at the colar. Is the throwout bearing really loose on the colar?

The sleeve is for the input shaft and the TOB rides on it, the bearing doesnt have any side to side play but i can slide it back and forth on the sleeve like its supposed to. I'm beginning to think the clutch was put on backwards which caused it to come apart in under 1000 miles. Would that cause the sleve to be "lipped" as well?

That sounds like a possibility. The clutch disk hub may have contacted the colar and "flared it out". I would carefully file down the ridge and inspect the colar for any more damage.

The rest of the sleeve looks ok, but the flare is double sided, outward away from the shaft and inwards toward the shaft, and i think there might be some metal shavings inside the sleeve.

Upon closer inspection of my old clutch/pressure plate it WAS installed backwards and the clutch disk itself is bent to a slight cup shape. (Fidanza 4 puck kevlar clutch)

So should i try to slide the sleeve out past the end of the input shaft and then sand the lips off and swap TOB's or pay to have a new sleeve put in? I'm still not 100% sure the shaft connects inside the tranny or not (Meaning that if i can pull the sleeve off completely or if it has to be taken off from the inside of the transmission)

Any info would help, Thanks :thumb:

I have a junk tranny at the shop. When I get into work tomorrow I will take a look and see if the sleeve is part of the bell housing. Im sure you will be okay with just filing down the sleeve and then sliding the tob off. I will post again once I get into work.

Thanks, will you also check if you can slide the sleeve far enough over the end of the shaft to be able to file the inner part of the sleeve w/o damaging the shaft as well? Thanks!

Okay, lets make sure we are talking about the same thing here. When you say sleeve, are you talking about the part that is between the tob and splined shaft? If so, that sleeve is fixed and will not go anywhere unless the tranny is opened up. The inner part of the sleeve should be fine the way it is because nothing goes into there. Just make sure that the shaft is not making contact with the sleeve..... It does not look like it in the pictures you have provided.

If I remember correctly the "sleeve" is part of the transmission case and will not come off. You should be able to file down that lip at the end of the collar and get the TOB off. Also, make sure you use an OEM TOB when you put it back together. It looks like you have one of the aftermarket TOB's. Most of these aftermarket TOBs use a metal inner sleeve which will wear down the collar on the input shaft as it moves back and fourth. The OEM TOB has a plastic inner sleeve so that it does not wear down the collar.

Well all i know is that the sleeve im talking about (the one in the picture that has the lip) is the only part of the shaft assembly that is in contact with the TOB, The TOB slides in and out on the "sleeve". I cannot move the sleeve by hand, the only time i can move it is when i tried to "pop off" of the TOB with a pry bar (Not allowing the pry bar to contact the bellhousing or sleeve/shaft, it was positioned on the fork and the TOB itself)

I cannot remove the TOB with the lip in place, which i plan on filing down simply to remove the bearing itself, but is this sleeve supposed to be able to move at all? When the sleeve was pulled out while attempting to remove the TOB the bearing stuck on the lip and moved the sleeve.

Should i be ok with just smoothing out the lip as best as possible? Or is this something that warrants replacing the whole sleeve assembly instead?

Thanks again for all the help guys.

And btw, i already have an OEM TOB waiting to go on inplace of the aftermarket one thats on there.

Well guys i filed the lip off and sanded it down with 1000grit sandpaper and then "pushed" the sleeve all the way down and threw everything back in the car. Absolutely no problems/noises so far but I only have 50 miles on the new clutch (break-in period, 450miles to go:thumb:) so who knows. I should be fine..

There is a steel sleeve in all AWD 2G trannies. The FWD 2G, all 1G AWD and FWD units do not have them. The PN is MD716349. I would highly recommend you replace it. When you press the new one in, make sure the shaft is clean and put a little locktite on it so it won't slide off while the car is running. On the units that don't come with this sleeve, they will sometimes have some pretty nasty wear on them. We will run the bell housing on our milling machine to shave the sleeve down so we can install the steel unit. It was very cool of Mits to do the sleeve in the 2G AWDs, too bad they didn't do it for the rest of them...
