I forgot to put the driveshaft in my transfer case as I was installing the engine/trans in my 96 gsx. can I disconnect the driveshaft from the rear, slide the shaft into the transfer case, then bolt the rear back up?

Your ALOT better off removing the transfer case to get the drive shaft in.

If you unbolt it from the rear end, you'd still have to contend with the mounted carrier bearings on the driveshaft which will keep the driveshaft centered and give you no movement to get it in the transfer case.

This. Unbolting the rear isn't going to do much 'cause it'll still be attached to the floorplan via the two carrier bearings.

Definitely. It's only five bolts that hold up the transfer case. It's easier to drop down the transfer case and then slide the driveshaft in this way.

yeah, I JUST got the engine/trans/transfer case all bolted in and the downpipe..but I guess there is no easier way. looks like ill have to drop the downpipe again...thanks guys

If you had your profile updated we'd know a little more about your set up. Generally an aftermarket 3" exhaust wont get in the way from the transfer case dropping. At least in my experience. Mine does since its something I fabbed up for my Holset and isnt perfect. But I can still get the t-case out without taking the downpipe off. I just need to pry over on it with something to get it the last half inch off of the input shaft.

Its just the t-case. Quit being a girl and just drop it and get it together. Its not like you have to drop the trans again just to put a shim in your pivot ball. Which I've had to do.
