Last night I started having Trans issues.:ohdamn:
95 Eagle Talon w/turbo FWD A/T 180,000 miles
When I would come to a stop the engine would start to bog down like it was still engaged in gear.
I would pop it in N and then back into D and it would just slip.
I limped it back home taking notes all the whole way.
Coming to a stop it would bog down.
If you would put the car in N then back into D Usually it would just slip.
The only way to get it working would be to come to a stop, turn off the car and then start it again. Stick it in D and go. If I would get on a long stretch of road(mile or so) It would run no problem. Once you came to a stop it HAD to go into N. Or it would bog.
I turned off the OD switch, Same problem.
Started the car and went straight to 2nd gear, Same problem.
Turning corners or going up or down hill do not cause the issue to appear.
The fluid is full and good.
I'm thinking the torque converter is going out.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Jay

Does it kill the engine or not? An automatic transmission is always "in gear" in a forward or reverse range.

It maybe sounds like your torque converter clutch is staying locked up. When this happens it will kill your engine or bog it down.

Your tcu may be picking this up and going into limp mode when detected. YOu say its going into second, but it may be third.

Oh ya I forgot it was making a whining sound too.
I never actually let it kill the engine but i'm thinking it would because when it first bogged down it almost stalled before I kicked it in neutral.
And just to check it I did let it bring the rpm down to 400 or so.

And yes I was thinking T.C. because it was acting like it was not disengaging.
And then from a start just slipping.

Hmmmm Ok i'll try and dig up an analog voltmeter and pull them.
Thanks for the help.
I'll check and see what I come up with.

Just ran down to pull codes.
I ran fine but it was also cold and only a mile away.
So take that for what it's worth.
The only code it pulled was a P0505
No Trans codes

Checked and good. It is full.
Time for a little background.
The transmission was rebuilt maybe 15,000 miles ago.
The whole sha-bang, clutches and new plates and all the other goodies.
At like 3,000 miles i replaced the fluid from the rebuild.
So the fluid has about 12,000 miles on it.
It looks good, still has the redness to it and smells like transmission fluid.
Kind of surprised at how good it does look.
So anyways that's where i'm at with that.

Now when you say check the fluid are you referring more towards the viscosity and breakdown of the fluid or just the level of it?

Just went and drove it.
Once it got a little warmed up it started in again.
I could not get it to kill the engine, it would start running around 300-400 RPM and rev up a little to keep running. I was touching nothing but the brake, so the computer was trying to keep it running.
It would slip into then just slip.
I could rev it up and once in awhile when I rev'd it up high it would start to try and move.
I would turn the car off and start it again and put it in Drive and could go.
Repeat again, and again, and again.
It might have been in limp mode twice, the rest of the time I could tell it was shifting from first to second.
Did that help?
