Hey Guys just helped a fellow Dsmer change out his trans since his 2nd gear synchro was bad and when we installed it the car acts like the clutch is slipping?
The clutch catches a little bit off the floor
,we taken the trans out and even changed the fork/ball and shim from the original trans that was in there and same thing ? What could be causing this ?
And I don't smell the clutch like its burning
It's a 90 awd car mt 5 speed

Sounds like you may have to adjust the clutch. Although you used the fork/ball and shim from the old transmission it is still a different one. So more adjustment is needed. By any chance did you get oil or something on the clutch disc or flywheel?

Is it slipping or not releasing? Slipping is when you hit the gas and the tach shoot up with little to no car movement. Not releasing is when you can not go into gear because the clutch disc is not freed from the flywheel and pressure plate when you press down on the clutch.

If it is slipping:
-check clutch disc, flywheel, and pressure plate for excessive wear
-make sure you have sufficient clutch pedal end play
-make sure to never over fill the tranny fluid. It will leak out of the input shaft seal and get on the clutch disc

If it is not releasing:
-check clutch disc for warpage
-check to make sure clutch disc springs not broke
-check pressure plate for warpage
-check flywheel for proper step
-check master cylinder for leak
-check slave cylinder leak
-make sure you adjust the master cylinder. If you have a 1g, you might need to extend the adjust rod to get enough adjustment to release the clutch. A adjustment rod from a 2g or Mirage are direct replacement. It is longer than the 1g adjustment rod.
-make sure the bolt in the rear with the 12mm head that tight the motor against the tranny is on.

Hope this help you narrow down your problem.

Good info there. Only thing I will add is when filling up tranny with fluid is to do it so that the fill plug is higher up (front of car on jack stands) and fill until it comes out in a slight stream. By the time I thread the fill bolt tranny is good to go. ( I rather overfill slightly then run slightly drier)
