I think with shepard you send them a good core and you pay around $800. With TRE you dont send a core they give you one and you pay around $1200. They both are about equal in quality I think. Just with shepard you pay less due to the core replacement. Dont have any good DSM builders in you area. I would have a reputable local shop do it. Sometimes is cheaper and sometimes better.

i would go with shepard. Right now i have the stage 2 rebuild which is amazing compared to all the other DSM's i drive in. But when i bought my car my brother drove it home from 200 miles away and once it got home my 2nd gear syncro is really loose. :L

How technically adept are you?

I ask because if you have the tools (pliers, circlip piers, press, depth gauge, normal sockets) and the technical ability you should be able to do it yourself and save some money.

This all depends on what exactly is wrong with it. you can't compare prices until you know what exactly needs to be replaced.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get teh 1200$ trans from TRE. Keep your current trans, and save up enough to send it to either TRE or SHEP for a "race" trans. Then you will have a backup when you need it.

With the budget build, you send your transmission to TRE and they work on it, and send you back the same one you sent in. The build cost is $950:

If you are in a pinch for time, they offer a turnaround service...you pay for the tranny and a $300 core charge and they send it to you, then you put your core in the box and ship it back so you don't have much downtime.

I just talked to Jon today as I dropped off 2 transmissions for him to build up, and he said he's trying to get turnaround times to around a week. They hired a bunch of people to disassemble, clean, glass-bead, etc...so work gets done quicker.

I have gone to Jon for about 4 or 5 rebuilds for various people around here and have had no complaints with any of them. Just my experience, choose what you'd like.
