I just finished putting my engine and everything in my car and then found out 2nd gear is tough to get into. I really dont want to pull the trans again and was wondering if anyone has ever replaces 2nd gear synchros or done any other trans rebuilds with the the transmission still in the car?

i would pretty much have to say no. i could guarentee that just pulling the trans out and rebuilding it would be much much easier then attempting to tear it apart in the car if its even feasable. lots of small parts in there. gravity and space constraints would not help at all with the transmission being sideways and surrounded by car. little parts trying to fall out and getting lost, or mixed up on the floor.. you get the idea.

Tranny pull isn't that hard. I was under a dsm and two 3kgts in a steak house parking lot dropping transmissions. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up. Ask me about 8 transmission drops in 3 days on my own personal car. In the time elapsed thus far it would've already been on the ground.

Better still a friend of mine that could not afford down time so he dropped the transmission, tore it apart to see what he needed and measure for shim then reassembled and put it back in. He then ordered parts and did it all over again.

What do you think would be better to just rebuild my transmission or get a whole rebuilt one from like Jacks Transmissions or somewhere where I know it would be good. If I would buy one somewhere I could get double synchronized 2nd gear too. I only DD this car so I'm kind of looking for something cheaper.

How have you rebuilds gone?

Double synchro is an OEM part. What to do will depend on the condition of what you have. What is wrong with it and what you want done is all up to you. It's possible to replace all the brass for 100$. It's also possible to spend 1000$ on just parts alone. I've done both.

Where have you had the best experience with ordering parts from?
I really wish I would have rebuilt it a week ago when I had everything out of the car. hahaha

Being that i'm in the middle of a trans rebuild and because of the disibility i have from motorcycle accidents it's very pain fuill to do most any major work on the car. I soon began wondering the same question. So, I asked a trans guru if it was possible and was told that Yes it is, BUT it's also much harder because you can't keep certain parts in place that easy with the trans sitting sideways (you rebuild with bell housing facing down typiocally). So short answer is yes, long answer is Yes, but it'sgonna be so much more of a PITA to do that you might as well save yourself the headache and frustration (as well as some time) and puill it out to start with

Since you just put the trans in.. did you adjust the clutch yet, because hard to get into gears causes can be from a dragging clutch.

Thanks, I will probably rebuild mine this fall hopefully and will probably just pull it out

I did not adjust the clutch at all, the trans shifts really good in all of the gears except for 2nd. And to get it into 2nd I have to be under 3000 rpm and slowly put it into gear. I do think that my clutch pedal is getting worn out because the release point is pretty close to the floor, but it doesn't go into any other gears hard.
