Ok so I just bought a 97 eclipse problem.automatic though it was a good trade though.car was clean. Ok.for my question how.much Hp or boost can that trans hold its the awd obviously jw

Glad see you got a dsm, but you soon will feel the love for the autos.They have stock auto's run 10's in the 1/4.But as for auto to 5 speed I think the auto's are a more bulletproof then the 5 speeds.You can run add as much hp as you want to them there is still a chance they will blow I think around 300ish whp is safe for longitivity but I have seen them make mad horsepower.I love my auto trans.

A good condition auto trans can hold about 400ish hp, and 30 psi.Like clipto said those 10 second autos were probably around 400hp,not 300 clipto.

True but I feel safe becuase I am right at 300whp with my stock auto trans at 110,000 miles with no issues just regular maintance is what I was refering to, but we will see how the trans will holds up at 400hp sometime in the future I know it has the potential.I mean there really isn't much you can do unless you get a stall converter but the auto trans feel bullet proof.Everything still have a chance to blow anytime tho.

There is actually more than you think you can do to upgrade the auto trans than just the converter.

A stall converter is a great thing to have.I almost just bought one but the girl wouldn't let me.

There are so many great things to do with an auto. Push button shifting is one. Plus add a stall and a different valve body and upgraded clutch packs and so on. U can make them much stronger. A friend of mine once told me manual transmissions are great for showing off at a highschool or in front of a mall, but an auto is going to win you races.

True there are alot you can do to them, but I always have seen much greatness from them just being stock so it can only get better.

Agreed it seems like in between shifts its still spoiling and doesn't stop untill u do I like it better honestly ive had 3 dsm's I. Can only imagine it will eliminate miss shifts and such and every eclipse ive had the was a 5 speed the syncro's went out but I also know how to.replace those never touched an auto but I am please with it being the way it is I def snagged a gem

You can eliminate shift lag from manuals as well. Tune the rev limit correctly and shift without letting off the gas eliminates shift lag. I personally like 5spd over auto due to being a road course fan not drag. Gives more control over the car for me at least.
Edit: also there is a backfire system that can be setup to keep the turbo spoiled during shifts and decel.

Yea I have no lift shift on my 97 tsi its ok but you still got to go through the gears.Imo auto's feel more bullet proof sure you can always make a little more power through the 5 speeds but I feel my auto is strong bullet proof pulling boost through all the gears and 1 less 5 speed tranny to blow.I have gone through 7 5 speed transmision in the last 2 years, yes they where like $300 junk yard ones but never had issue with the auto.I am pushing 112,000k miles on my auto abused daily and she still shifts like butter.Just my .02 tho different for everyone but to a degree there 2 totally different things like night and day.
