trans question

Ok,I am perty mechanical person and do it yourself guy ive had good amount of time working on my car and my friends gst did a turbo swap,but dont have experience with this so this may be a dumb question but i gota ask to know forsure..Ive been haven isses with grinding into 2nd.i hae to let my rpms drop down low to reduce the grind and i cant downshift from 3rd to 2nd without grinding to. I belive this is my synchronizer correct? If so how much does something like that cost to have fixed? id prob pull the trans out myself n then take it to be repaird. Though if cost alot id rather find a new or used trans n swap them. I did find a trans andthis is where it might sound stupid but i found a 95-99 eclipse/talon fwd turbo trans someone selling near me for 200.00 that works fine no grinding or problems shifting into gear. My question is though i have a 95 gsx. would you be able to bolt a fwd tranny into an awd eclipse and have workout? If so thatd be nice and id just buy that trans and switch them.Please let me know asap if that will work if so i am trying to get this trans in the next week to do that.Thanks

If you are looking for a new trans check the classifieds or TheDSMgraveyard.com they usually have some transmissions that come with a 30 day warranty. Also you can't use a GST tranny on a GSX..

Well... To get to the 2nd gear synchro rings you have to tear the whole thing down. The mechanic then has to disassemble the intermediate shaft to get the synchro rings off. To do that you have to pull off the bearing that is on the end of the shaft. I have not found a way to pull off the bearings without bending the cage on them, rendering them useless. So you'll have to figure in cost for at least one new bearing if you wanted just 2nd gear synchro done. Also, if it's been grinding for quite some time then you'll probably need to replace the hub/slider because the teeth are probably worn down from grinding against each other. Also might have to replace 2nd gear if it's really bad.

2nd gear synchro rings: $75.00
Tapered Roller Bearings: $25ea
Shaft end nuts: $6
2nd Gear: $160
1-2 Hub/Slider: $120

Labor: ????

While you have someone looking at it, you might as well have them rebuild the whole thing and replace any worn out parts.

Thanks for getting me that info quickly..so when you say mind as well have rebuilt you mean as the whole trans or just have all the synchroz done at once.After hearing all this what in your opinion would probly be the best.find a used trans or just have mine repaird..guess better question what do you think would be cheaper.used or have my curent trans repaird.

A used trans would most definitely be cheaper. But, how long will it last?

It would be more reliable to get your current trans repaired though!!

Well guess that is the real question how long used one would last..well guess im gona look around for used one if i can come across one for a good price i might just get it and hope it last for awhile.mayb if get a used one try n get my current one repaird n then ill have an extra one laying around.Thanks for the help
