I read an older forum where aomeone mentioned that switching to an aftermarket unit isnt good for the 1gs because of fluid resistance needed by the stock cooler.

Is this outdated info? Im planning on going aftermarket and dont want to mess anything up on the new trans

I have never heard of this and I've been a Ford and before that a Chrysler trans specialist for 15yrs.

Well I read through that, I have to say I've never heard of this. I'd also venture to say it's a non issue but if I'm wrong I'd like to know it before I get mine going since I'm running the large b m cooler also.

Thats why i asked here! Thread is 2003

Is it a good idea to upgrade the cooler, yes. Do you have to, no.

Many folks including myself have run the auto trans modded or stock with the stock cooler. Now if your going to be brake boosting every chance you get, you might want to consider this upgrade. When brake boosting the trans will run a little hot.
You might also want to consider just adding a shift box, and run on a higher line pressure. The soft shifts on regular line pressure actually causes more heat than full pressure shifting.

also if youre running a converter other than stock configuration should upgrade the cooler as well. bigger coolers never hurt when it comes to keeping good trans temps.

Any time I own an automatic and I plan to keep the car, I do like to put a trans cooler in it. I started with my old 84 trans am with an expensive b&m unit with it's own fan and everything. Did the same on my drag racer auto C5 Corvette which I could actually see data on. Realized that even a cheapo cooler in series with the stock cooler will keep temps well low enough. My cars even being put through hell never got the trans temps hot enough to have the fans come on. I'm sharing this so you can feel safer just hooking up an extra cooler preferably in series without the expense. Like $30 for a universal on flea-bay or wherever.

Since i need to relocate stock anyway with my fmic set up i was just going to get a full kit.. i assumed no fan needed in my application
