So last summer i put my eclipse on the road (turbo awd) and second gear always had this problem where it would grind if you shifted it to fast into second. ok whatever. then first gear started to grind when you down shifted into it, alright no more downshifting into first, whatever. then third just went, you could shift into it but it would grind NO MATTER WHAT even sitting still pushing in the clutch if you tried to touch third it will grind BUt it will still shift into third it's just noisy and slow to get into. so i decided this i couldn't live with and i'd have to fix so i replaced the master cylinder thinking maybe the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way, did absolutely nothing. then i changed the gear oil again (because i did at the beginning of the summer to try and fix second) this time with syncromesh, absolutely nothing changed. then the clutch went and i put everything off until now and was happy just driving the winter beater anywayz. so about a week ago some lady in a minivan rearended my 1984 318i i've been driving all winter leaving the car driveable but technically "totaled". so i've decided to go with a 2600 and the new xact flywheel and a new fork. now i'm wondering would a worn fork pivot point be what caused all my problems?????? or is my tranny trashed and time for a rebuild? if it's time for a rebuild i wil probably send it out to shep in ohio, normally i'm a DIY person but this is one thing i want done right if i'm gonna have it done. so could the fork be all my problems?? and who has had the shep rebuild and is it worth it?? thanks alot

Wow your tranny sounds exactly like mine. Get up under the car and see where the clutch fork is sitting through the hole, that'll tell ya if the fork is worn, but most likely you have work the F out syncro's like me, plus I have a shimmed worn fork to boot :(

new synchros take time to wear in, tranny will be notchy as all hell for a few hundred miles, im going through this right now with my TRE synchros.. im at 500 miles and the shifting is just now starting to get alot better..

they have to break in.

hey thanks i didn't know they needed to be broken in, i usually rack up miles pretty good tho so shouldn't be a problem. but is sounds like i need a rebuild though?? thanks
Ryan

the synchro points have to wear so that they best matchy the gear points, its normal.. give it time..

I do not get on here very much but a member referred me to your post. Being that it is happening in certain gears it sounds like the synchros are probably bad, In 90-92 they used a synchro with friction material on the inside. This works ok but not for long. All of the newer synchros are a traditional brass ring. One easy way to tell if your clutch is disengaging is by pushing the clutch in at idle ,wait a few seconds then try and go into reverse. If it grinds badly then there is a good chance the clutch is dragging or not disengaging all the way.

hey thanks alot for the reply reverse always seemed to be fine, so i started to drop the tranny today and will probably send it out to be rebuilt in a few weeks. thanks for all the replys:thumb:

ive had my tranny put 4 times now, and i KNOW what im doing, still.. i would recommend sending it to TRE or Shep racing for a rebuild.. there is just too much stuff you can do wrog.. trust me
