Im planning on getting a 5 speed tranny and sending it to shep to be rebuilt and upgraded and a gvr4 1st gr,billet shift forks, etc. i am wondering if its going to be rhougher shifting gears or smoother or no difference at all? personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

I got the rebuild and its much, much smoother. No grinds or notchiness at all. Some people say that after the rebuild, the first 2000 miles or so will feel notchy.. but that wasn't the case for me.

the upgrades im looking at cost about 1500. alot yes but for that piece of mind i think its worth it. youll never need another trans. and if its good enough for sheps 8sec passes i think itll do just fine.

Mine was about 1300, I had the basic rebuild listed on his site (inclduing double synchro 2nd), plus new 3rd gear, hub and sleeve, torrington bearing upgrade, my cracked bellhousing welded, and some other stuff I don't remember. Best money I spent on my car thus far.

I've got a Shep racing tranny in my '90 Talon TSi AWD. It is the best build-up you can get so my input here may not be worth much as I don't think many will go this route (it is a $3500 rebuild). But I can say that it shifts SO smooth, feels very heavy (that is a good thing) and is all around bulletproof/solid.

Not only is it a top-notch tranny, but John himself will cater to your every need, has a super-quick turnaround, and provides the best possible customer service. And the guy runs his DSM in the 8's. That's enough for me to go with him :D

Best of luck!

I advise in not getting the G-VR4 1st gear. It might add 6mph more but you are substituting strength with speed. Alot of the hardcore guys have went the gvr4 route only to return to the dsm because of chipped and broken teeth.

All in all, Shep is a great guy with tons of info. You can't go wrong.:thumb:

I agree 110%. Shep told me personally that if I'm going to be doing alot of 1/4 mile races or alot of hard launches I want to stay away from the G-VR4 1st gear upgrade. He said to me hes seen alot of people break that first gear when they are launhing the car (gsx) because it usually wants you out of first rather quick (reason first is so short). So I didn't go with that upgrade but I did get a new 3rd and his other basic package. He had no problem answering all my questions OVER THE PHONE and even went to walmart and picked up a box for me to ship it back to the shop that was installing it.

I couldn't have ASKED for a better experience with a company. :thumb:
I wouldn't hesitate more than 1 second to order again from him or tell someone else to order from him also.
