Come on! He said BIGGER and not BETTER :).

Shep tranny all the way!!! I am on 2+ plus years of running 10's/low 11's on a standard Shep rebuild.

GRnDSM! Is this the $895 standard(basic) Shep rebuild tranny? Did you add any options like the Spider 4, Torrington bearings, steel shift forks...etc? Thanks. :thumb:

I would definitely go with Shep or TRE over BM. They all have some bad apples i'm sure, but I've read some pretty bad horror stories about BM, where BM didn't deal with the customer in a professional manner at all in public.

Both my brother and i had our trans built by TRE, and have been very pleased with their service and how well our trans's have been holding up to all the abuse we put them through. They've performed flawlessly through 2 seasons at the strip with ~100 passes on them like this in the high 11 low 12 second range with alot of 1.6- 1.7 60 ft's.

Tre has over 15 years of experience building transmissions while pioneering most of the upgrades that are currently available. They've recently added alot of new equipment to the shop to help furthur increase the performance and strength of their rebuilds, and done alot of testing on the strength capacity of various parts of the transmission. They have a Peterson wet magnuflux particle bench used for inspection, a shot peening machine to strengthen parts, a CNC machine for custom precision modifications, and an industrial sized glass beading machine that makes the case look like new. My brother and i would recommend them to anyone looking for a rebuild.

Comparing the trannies you mentioned is not comparing apples to apples. The race trans replaces both shafts, 1,2,3,4 gears and also gets you the double synchro 3rd and 4th gear which is $400 more by itself. If you are not shifting at 8500 rpm or higher then you really do not need it.

hands down shep

and yet another positive comment

he made my transmission like gold
i got the grand deluxe and it was worth every penny
made the car feel like new!!!
if i ever purchase another dsm shep is the first person i am going
to call to get the tranny done!

Well thanks for the replies, it looks like I will be making an order with Shep sometime over the winter.

You wont meet a nicer more honest guy than shep, and he's obviously puts his money where his mouth is.

Not that TRE is a bad company at all, but you cant go wrong by choosing shep

I would go with Shep. I work on Dsm's in the Protland, OR area. A cust. of Shep's had AAMCO install one of his trannys. They broke off the speed sensor on install and then told the kid that the tranny was bad. Shep. found my # and I looked at the car they had installed a speed senosr from a different car. Shep. sent me a new speed sensor and paid to have me isnstall it. It is hard to find cust. service like that. I build my own trannys and have to say that sheps double cone 3rd and 4th are amazing.

I broke my own off when I was trying to install my shep tranny, I should have thought to take it off before hand, as to avoid this, stupid mistake now that I think about it because I could see it would hit.

I was set on a Shep racing tranny and know that it is top notch but I was wondering what people thought about the BM tranny. It is about $400 cheaper and is on some of the fastest DSM's so it obvisouly can handle what I am going to be throwing at it. Is the Shep tranny worth the extra $400?

BM maybe on some of the fastest DSM's but SHEP has the worlds fastest AWD DSM. I looked at TRE. The guys there were jerks to me but i hear they do good work. Shep is who I am sending my tranny to this week. Good guy, great work. i haven't heard anything about BM though but then again thats because i never looked :D

Shep, Shep, Shep, and Shep.

Before you look further, go with Shep.

After you are done wasting your time looking elsewhere, go with Shep.

I loved my Shep tranny. It treated me sooooo good. I am sure it will make another person just as happy for years to come (car was parted out just recently to finance new project/pay da bills).

OH yeah, get Shep :D

My B&M has a double synchro second and third, and EVO steel shift forks.

I love it. Smooth as butter, runs perfect, but I haven't beat on it much, either. We'll see come spring time I suppose.

I don't want to open new thread on the same topic. I have a spare 93 awd tranny that needs 3rd gear synchros. I'm going to send it out to Shep for a rebuild but not sure which options. I would like to add the option of double 2nd gear synchros, steel shift forks. I like the race rebuild but $2400 is just too much $. I want save $ left over to use toward a built motor and FP turbo setup.

So my question, is there anyone with experience with Shep basic rebuild? Is it worth $900? Any regret not going with full race rebuild? How much is shipping? Any inputs will greatly appreciated! :thumb:

Cant go wrong with a Shepard Tranz!!

My first tranz in my fwd was a BM tranz with there phantom lock. I had nothing but problems with that tranz. The diff exploded and blew threw the bellhousing. Now Im running a Shep tranz in my awd and it works perfect. Better than mitsubishi ever dreamed

G'day John/everyone,

Does it still uses factory gear ratios or revised ones?

Out of curiousity, does Sean Glazar's DSM uses the Shep racing box?If yes, I noticed that it somehow has a different 1st and 2nd gear ratios(RPM dropped a lot) when compared to the Shep Racing's DSM.

Heres the video.

Cheers.

So John what would you recomend for tranny work if I plan on running a built 2.4L and an FP 3575?

I recently had John Shepherd rebuild my AWD tranny and do various other work. I have not driven the car yet as the car is/was a real mess (I bought it with spun rod bearing/ beat up tranny and in boxes) I am still reassembling it. But the level of quality of service that John does is very impressive!! John has answered all my questions very politely and promptly. He may drive the fastest AWD out there but you can't tell from his personality, from my experience talking to other builders with fast DSMs it seems that often with a fast car comes a superior attitude (and superior prices) and are not nearly as helpful or friendly. And like others I have not found too many people who haven't been pleased with his work. Hope this is helpful in your DSM tranny rebuilder searches.

i would have to say john as well i'm up here in alaska so we gotta send everything out but i've sent 2 trannys to hime for other people and they work out great (one origanly was a tre) but he was awsome in discusing options and what happened to the trannys in fact i'm about to send him another one this time mine cause i've gone through 4 stockers so i think i've out grown them...LOL

It seems like going with John Shep is a no brainer when I count the many positive replies here compared to others!:thumb:
