tranny out and need to start car??

ok so i got a 91 awd tsi and i am rebuilding the tranny. The tranny is out right now and it turns out that i am not going to be rebuilding it as soon as i thought but i need to do other stuff on the car and i need to start the car to do so. But i am trying to come up with a way of mounting the starter without the tranny in. Any one have any good tips or tricks?

im not positive, but when they dyno motors at factorys i dont think they have trannies attatched, and in theory there is really no reason why the tranny has to be attatched, all the transmission does is put the engines power to the wheels.

please tell me why this is a bad idea? because i dont see a reason why i couldnt except for how the starter mounts.

No they don't have a trans bolted to them they have the dyno bolted to the end thats how the measure crank horsepower. They have a piece that is very much like a bellhousing bolted to the engine and also bolted to the flywheel that measures the hp.

if you can figure out how to get the starter attached to it then go for it. Just make sure nothing falls on your flywheel
