we attached a $2000 camera to the car and drive really fast...haha. just kidding.

what we did was have the camera on a tripod. then you have someone hold the tripod on the side of the car and do a LONG shutter. i believe this one was about 8 or 10 seconds. have someone push the car ever so slowly. if you look closely at the picture, you can see that the lights in the background havent moved very far

Yeah, also notice the wheels... there was a spot that you guys were pushing the car slower then the other... so you can see the wheel spoke more. I've done photos like that before... But what I did was I made suction cup feet for my tripod... put it on where I wanted the picture... tightened everything up right... and installed straps all over the car holding the tripod down in area's that weren't going to be photographed... like the hatch and crap like that... Almost crushed my tripod doing it... But then we set a 30 second timmer with a prolonged shutter, which I don't remember how long....and jumped in the car and took off..

I used to have some Camera's that were very light and had suction cups and easily mounted to any location of the car I wanted... but they needed a laptop to operate.

We took some great photos....

Sorry for the hyjack!

Next season I may rock some 255 or 275's for track days. Gotta take off the wheels to swap pads, so why not throw on the R's. I knew I bought that extra set of wheels for a good reason.
Rough living an hour's drive from Road America. :rocks:

I got a set of 275 Hoosiers to fit on 10-in. wide CCRs without doing anything to the fenders. I used a set of 10mm spacers to clear the rear suspension arm. The whole deal sticks out about an inch, front and rear. We had to raise the Ground Control suspension back up about an inch in the rear to clear the tires, so the car is back to being level again. (we had lowered it to the max). No changes were required on the front. I'll have the car at RA in October (if the good lord is willing and the creeks don't rise), so you can see 'em.

I wish you would take better car of my old car. I loved that car.

Rich
You are the guy that threw the hood at the roof! :p

That transmission lasted 147,000 miles. That isn't too shabby. I ALWAYS used fresh Redline. It was just time. Remember last fall, when I mentioned that it was making more noise than usual on decceleration?

I had no idea that the gear whine under decceleration meant "tapered roller bearing failure is imminent". A local DSM transmission guy told me about that... after the carnage.

I think my luck has been quite good with this rig. She'll be back. Better. Stronger. Faster.

No joke. Stay tuned.

Oops, topic deviation alert!

Phil,
If I had those Gramlights, I would not look back
unless I absolutely NEEDED an ideal setup to WIN RACES.
An offset that's a whopping 3mm in from ideal is not gonna be a problem.
Just my opinion.

Thanks man. I actually fitted them the other day and they seem to work well. I also fitted a set of Enkei RPF1's 17X9.5" with an 18 ET. They were near perfect on the inside as far as clearance but did stick out pretty far in front, either way, for 275 tires they would be sweet.

Phil

This thread has a lot of good information in it! very nice guys. lots of knowledge i see. now if only there were the same for 2Gs ;(

I have my friends 97 GSX around if you need me to fit some wheels for testing. I have access to many differnet wheels/sizes......

Alright find how to fit 245 or hell 275s on a dsm that wont rub on a moderate drop for us road race guys....and im talking about hoosiers, not slim street tires.

I am running 275 Hoosiers on my 1G, using 9-in. wide Mustang Cobra replica wheels and 10mm spacers in the rear.

Oops--not quite right.

The 275 Hoosiers are on 17x10 CCW wheels, and require 10mm spacers in the rear. They stick out from the front and rear fenders by a mile, but they don't hit.

The 17x9 Cobra SVT wheels have 235 Toyos mounted, and they do not require spacers. I have also run 245 Hooisers on those wheels.

Sorry about that.

Come to Road America next weekend, and you can see for yourself. It's the Blue Eclipse with the for sale sign on it.

Ok, I have a question: 17"x9"

I was wondering if you could help me out. Which offset do I need so that I don't have to cut my shocks, since I have Tein lowering springs, rather than the coil-overs? Also, I don't want to have the tires way out, so that my bearings will wear out faster, but I wouldn't mind rolling my fenders? Please forgive me if you think that I'm trying hi-jack this thread/however you call it.
Thanks, in advance.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to that question. Both my 235 Toyos on Cobra 17x9 wheels and the 275 Hoosiers on 17x10 CCW wheels are "way out." The Hoosiers are so far out they could be cited for indecent exposure. But they look realy cool.

245's should work just fine with the mustang wheels.

I'm running 275/40-17's on my rear truck axle. I really wish there was an easy setup for adapting a better rear suspension onto our poor fwd 1g's. Greg Collier was almost to the point where he was going to put the Hyundai Tiburon rear suspension on his as they have alot of suspension kits for it and the setup is pretty good and very adjustable from the factory. It would take alot of work, but it may be something I even look into in years to come.

Sounds like an awful lot of work for probably not a big enough gain though I understand the want to do that as there's virtually no alignment adjustment in the rear of the fwd cars.

That's the exact reason I've not done it yet.

One of Chris' car and one of mine. Chris's is the white one.

Fwiw, they don't seem to "tuck" but at least in my case, (really stiff springs) it doesn't ever rub unless I hit a midcorner bump so bad that the car literally gets serious air. Even then, I have to be trying to do so, and then it's only the drivers-side front.

Your results may vary.

What size are your tires in this picture ?

245 40-17's. Update, this setup doesn't touch when cornering/touching curbing on the racetrack, either. :thumb:

For that amount of work you might as well go awd. I'm looking at an awd 90 talon shell to replace the fwd laser. I'd much rather have that then the laser, for many reasons.

We'll see if it works out.

Yea, but unless you're in the rain or making 800+hp the awd traction advantage just barely offsets the extra weight you carry. I think on a 300 or so hp car the fwd'd lighter weight may work out better.

Thats a ridiculously high generalization high horsepower rating for needing awd I'd have to say 300 up for FWD is troublesome and in the rain cars with wider tires are much more prone to hydroplaning .

What MidShip says is true for street tires, but not necessarily so for race tires.

We were running at Road America a few weeks ago when it started to rain hard. I was on super-wide 17x275 Hoosier slicks, but I stayed out. At the end, there was only me, an STI, and a Corvette left out of the 30+ cars that started in run group A, and I was catching both of them. I experienced no hydroplaning, even at speeds up to 125 mph on the straights, and only had to be careful under braking so I didn't lock them up.

Cornering was, of course, a bit dicey. On a "seasoned" track like Road America, you want to stay off the standard line through corners, because the line gets slicker than owl shit, so you take the "rain line."

The trick is to run R-rated tires because, once they get good and hot, they stay sticky, even in the rain. In fact, Phil of Phil's Tires told me that racing slicks are better than street tires in the rain. Of course, rain tires are best, but racing slicks ain't all that bad.

In 2006, at a NASA event at Road America, the two fastest cars in all the morning sessions in the rain were me on slick 17x235 Toyo Proxes and an S2000 on Hoosier rains.

R-rated slick tires and AWD work very well in the rain. And an AWD with rain tires is probably unbeatable. If you can afford it, bring a set of spare wheels with rain tires mounted. If it rains, you will clean up. Like MidShip says above, you might not want to get superwide rain tires--on the other hand, a properly designed rain tire channels all the water away, so maybe it doesn't matter what size tire you run. I'd consult with Phil's Tires and order whatever size he recommends for your car.

I love racing in the rain. I particularly love coming up on the 500 hp boys, and blasting past them with AWD as they try to get traction.

300 up is troublesome on the street on street tires. On the track (where you'll rarely be below 3rd gear) and on r-compounds that story changes greatly. Just look at the great success that World Racing is having with their 500hp Scion TC against awd and rwd competition. The front straights of a road course are much like making a highway pull. The awd may get on the gas a little sooner, but the lighter weight of the fwd and lower drivetrain resistance will keep it there and the lighter weight will also let it get on the brakes later.

I'd be willing to bet that an accomplished driver with a 400hp fwd and equally well setup 400hp awd wouldn't be that far apart on the road course in total time, but their segment times would be different due to each car's attributes.

FWD cars have to be lighter, all else being equal, to be competitive. http://www.grand-am.com/CONTENT/Docs/PDF/2007/KONIRules.pdf

It's just physics. ALL the weight, and inputs are going to the front tires, and that creates heat. FWD cars start to push as the laps add up.

Porsche's oversteer late in the session.

Beyond physics and rule books, drivers find ways to win.

The great thing is that in Time Trials the laps aren't that big of a concern as you're only shooting for that one hot lap.

Ah, but that's the trick, ain't it? Ideally, you do it like the Formula 1 boys do--get the tires up to optimum temperature, find clean air, and go for a hot lap under perfectly ideal conditions. Alas, this rarely happens. There is always slower traffic getting in the way, the tires get hot, the brakes fade, a caution flag comes out, and so on.

The AMS boys do it with radios and spotters. The spotters tell the AMS driver whether to speed up, slow down, take a trip to pits, or whatever it takes to get clean air, and then they go for it. Sometimes they only go out for 3 or 4 laps--enough to heat the tires and brakes and find clean air, and then they come in. AMS isn't in it for the thrill of driving around a track, they are in it to WIN.

The rest of us schlubs just stay out, running lap after lap, trying to get one really good one in the traffic, and hope for the best.

I was inspired by this thread and just ordered up some new wheels in 17x9 and the same Falken 255/40/17's. I found a good looking wheel that is much less expensive though, I'll post up some pics when they come in next week. :sneaky:

Now I just need to sell off my old Volks to pay 'em off. ROFL
