I have a 96 GS and i am considering swapping it for a 2.0 turbo. What is the average cost of a good rebuilt 2.0 turbo these days? And would i have to swap the tranny too seeing i would be putting a different engine in it. Im noticing recently that when i am at a stop with the car in drive it wants to surge rpm's down from 800 to about 400 then back to 800 rpm's. It dont do this in park though which is odd to me. Thats my other reason for wondering the cost.

Turbo Engine Swap
This project is extremely time consuming, complex and expensive due to the amount of parts needed to perform the task. The parts alone can range upwards of $5000. The basic parts needed are: Engine, transmission, ECU, intercooler (and piping), fuel pump, complete exhaust system, and possibly a few more things not mentioned. The two options above are definitely better choices for the less experienced. Consider the cost of simply buying a factory turbocharged DSM before attempting this swap.

Let me google that for you

If you can't fix your idle surge you think you can turbo your car?

It depends. If you go to a DSM performance shop and buy a stock rebuilt 7 bolt 4g63t long crate engine, plus your intercooler and ECU and everything, you'll likely be in the $4k-5k range. Alternatively, you could go to a junkyard and try to find a low mileage 2g dsm engine, which might run you in the 1500 to 2k range plus your IC. Or you can keep your eyes on your local craigslist and pick up a wrecked GST or TSi for cheap, plus then you'll have the ever essential parts car available. If I were you, I'd stay away from eBay engines, I personally have trouble sending thousands of dollars to someone I've never met to buy a product I've never seen in person.

Your idle surge could be caused by a few things, possibly a gummed up throttle body, a boost leak, dirty MAF sensor, etc. You can address the TB and MAF pretty cheaply, and you can make a boost leak tester cheaply too.

All in all, I agree with Omar - Buy a GST, GSX, TSi, etc. Got mine for $3500...

You are not going to swap a 4g63 into the car. It doesn't just bolt in. You will have to cut the lower frame rails and strut towers from a turbo car and weld them into your car. If you want a 4g63 car than you will have to sell yours and buy a turbo car.

He drives a non turbo how is it going to be a boost leak exactly?

You should probably stop giving others advice untill you start figuring out what you yourself are talking about....:ohdamn:
