I have a strange tick/tapping noise, loudest at the crank pulley. The noise really only occurs between 1000-2500 RPM. It happens in any gear, regardless of clutch position, AC on or off. After 2500 or so, the noise fades out.

Im prepared to do my first timing belt, and I have studies all the tech articles as best I can.

The video doesnt really capture the noise except at about 1:40, as I pulled the camera out of the wheel well. car has about 160,000 on the odometer. As far as I know, the belt was done before I bought it (80, 000 miles ago, there is a gates belt on it right now)

Lemme know what you guys think, again... I really hope the video is not misleading, because the noise is a tapping ticking kind of noise.

That sounds like the timing belt idler pulley or tensioner pulley going bad,but you should replace both along with the timing and balance belt and water pump since youre in there.

Yeah, ive ordered a full timing kit from DSMgraveyard. The balance shaft thing kinda freaked me out, i diddnt really want to deal with puling those with the engine in the car.
I was thinking about the cam seals, I was tryig to find a good how-to article... to no avail. My Chilton manual is garbage, i mostly use it to prop my head up while I work under the car!

Just saw a video of a 4g63 in a van making a very similar noise. He claims it was his balance shaft bearings. While I'm doing the timing belt, is there anyway to diagnose the bearings without putting it all back together and firing the engine?

If the BS are shot, what are my options for in car removal? I can't find any decent articles. Just ones with the engine out.

Well, no reason to think balance shafts now, got the timing cover off....

Now if only DSMGraveyard had sent me my tensioner, and the proper balance belt tensioner.

Also, im having a problem getting the water pump off.... any tips?

Look on the bottom surface of the tensoner pulley assembly arm. Look for a small indentation from the arm bouncing on the hydralic tensioner pin. I had one get weak at 30,000 miles. The belt causes a whipping effect at 2500 RPMs. You can see the belt slack bounce between the cam gears as engine is at 2500 RPMs. It makes a load rattling noise.

The hydraulic tensioner itself is what i find to be messed up, more often than not. the piston seals get weak then the tension turns into slack. thats when the slap starts to occur just a thought

The pictures indicate that the balance belt snaped, the timing belt was undamaged.

For some reason, Im having a hell of a time getting the water pump off the water pipe. Is there some kind of trick, or something thats holding on for dear life? Im afraid I'll damage the pipe.

Got it all back together. Car started quite rough, with a constant misfire in cyl #2... then evened out after about 2 minutes. Car runs fine now, no coolant leaks, no misfires.
Jays Racing tools made the job so much easier. Thanks for the help from everyone. :hellyeah:

The balance belt was broken. I replaced balance belt and timing belt. I also replaced the balance tensioner, timing tensioner pulley, idler pulley, hydraulic tensioner, and the water pump.

Good job. I trust you found out that the water pump only comes loose with cussing and fighting?

Cam seals though? Either way, you were asking about instructions. The work is simple. Remove VC, note which bolts go where. Unbolt cams, pick out cam seals, drop in new ones and put that ish back together. Apart from breaking free the cams from the gears, it was cake. Be prepared with a new VC gasket and a HUGE breaker bar. I needed 4feet of bar.. used a bike rack support. It was the only thing big enough. That's my abbreviated version, at least.

Yeah, water pump was easy after I moved the PS pump and bracket. Then cussing with a prybar.
