hey guys so the last shop rally jacked up my timing. My cam gears were off by 2 teeth was all I noticed but then I brought my car to a guy that has worked on a lot of my friends vehicles and he just showed me that the installed the belts wrong, jacked up my bottom timing cover, whatever the silver plate is behind the crankshat sprocket is scraping away at the crankshaft sensor but neither of us know exactly what is causing it and I was hoping for some input so I don't have to have it taken apart and inspected. Also I did look at the vfaq but since I'm posting this I mind as well ask, Is the crankshaft sprocket set correctly? I couldn't find a marking when I was down there actually loking at my car.

It shouldnt be scraping the sensor, the metal plate is what the sensor detects. Cant tell completely, but it does look like you have the crankshaft set at TDC for piston 1. There is a notch in the silver plate at the edge that you line up with a ridge next to the bolt. You can *almost* see it in your last pic on the bottom left of the belt.

maybe they put the metal plate behind the crank sprocket on backwards or they could have bent it. im pretty sure if you put that plate on backwards the timing marks wont line up with tdc and it will chew up your timing belt

Id start from scratch, the plate should ride center to the sensor gap. Maybe the sensor housing is cracked, they snap real easy if your not careful upon disassembly. Maybe the plate is bent, or installed backwards. If the plate was on backwards you would have a hard time finding TDC, and setting timing properly.

Might want to fix that oil leak while you are in there. Oil on the belts very bad. Also you do know that this is an interference engine which will bend the valves if the timing is too far off.

I just went to autozone and ordered a new plate. Tomorrow ill go to the shop and check it out is replacing the plate hard?

Replacing the plate is easy. But redoing the timing (which must be done to access the plate) is a bit more tedious. Just follow the how to on vfaq and triple check everything.

The oil was from a cracked valve cover leaking all over my belts I've replaced the valve cover and it no longer leaks but I haven't gotten to the belts before. The timing belt isn't gonna be a problem I just didnt know if the crankshaft sprocket would be a pain happy to know it isn't. Yes I know that having the timing off can bend valves so once I noticed it was off I stopped driving. I haven't taken the head apart or done a pressure test so I can't be positive but I haven't heard any noises. I'll try and figure out how to pressure test my system once the timing is fixed and done.

I am having a similar problem with my 97 gst . I am getting a scraping noise and the plate has scratch marks on it and what looks like someone has tried to fix with a screw driver. Also having major oil leakage problem from one of the tensioner . I used my sethascope to listen to where the sound was coming from and it was coming from the tensioner ( where scraping noise was the loudest) . Has anyone had this problem or any advise? Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad spelling. Here are some pictures

Clean the entire area with a couple cans of brake cleaner. Put some uv dye in your oil. Spin the oil pump with a drill for a few minutes, and look for oil with the uv light. This will find your leak.

On another note. Check your crankshaft end play.

Once you maneuver to a forum such as Newbie forum there will be an orange button to post a new thread. As you type in the title to your thread, this ingenious site will offer several similarly titled threads that you may look at and often you won't even need to post the question you thought you need to!
