1G Timing issues 4g63na g1

Ok guys I've got a 90 eclipse with a 4g63na. I just rebuilt the top end (popped the head gasket on the way home). The car runs.....alright but I know somethings wrong. The car idles perfect but revving the car up to 3500 the timing advances to 62° I've tired 2 different ecus but I have the same result. I did set the timing at 5° with the wire grounded. Everything I've been reading says total timing is 15-25 over stock. What can I be missing?

Should double check the mechanical timing and the CAS notch is set properly first.

So I've flipped it both ways and it doesn't make a difference and I can't tell a difference with the way the car runs either.

When you say mechanical timing are you referring to the timing marks on the cam and crank?

Yes. Cam and crank.

If you did the balance shaft belt too, did you put the disc with the timing notch that goes behind the crank pulley on correctly? It only goes on one way but can be put on backwards. I've done it.

I've checked everything and it's all where it should be and yes I replaced the balance shaft belt and put everything back where it should be. I've timed the car and it timed at 5° at idle but jumps to 62° total at 3500.

What controls total timing on these cars?

Also what tells the computer where the crank is other than the CAS? I've went in and flipped it and it didn't change total timing at all.
