Wuts Up guys. My timing belt snapped last week. It snapped on me early in the morning on my way back from the clubs on my birthday. I have searched and read about timing belts being snapped, but I still wanted to ask a couple of questions just to get some fresh answers and suggestions. I am a college student so my money is very limited, especially since I just had the entire motor rebulit in Feb. I'm sure with my luck and from what I have read, heard, and learned is that when my belt snapped I bent some valves. So I basically need a head job. The thing is I dont have like 800 bucks laying around. I know of a junkyard with a 2 gen gst sitting where I got another dash out of. Do you guys recommend taking the head off of that car and putting it on mine. Im sure i would need to replace some seals and stuff, but that should be a whole lot cheaper that having to send mine to the machine shop. When the motor was rebuilt I had new water pump, oil pump, belts, gaskets, etc. replaced. Im really in shock that my timing belt snapped.
Or maybe should I look into buying a rebuilt head? How much do those generally cost? I live in Orland and got UCF. Anyone know where I could purchase a rebuilt head from? Any suggestions, advice, comments would be greatly appreciated, I really need to get my car up and running again. If there is anyone in this area who knows how to work on these cars and is looking to make some extra cash and could help me out please let me know. Thanks again guys for any help you can provide.

before buying anything i'd take off the head and make sure the pistons are still ok, could have holes or gouges in them.

timing belt snapped after 5 months?

One could state the the number 1 thing SHOULD be...if you modify a car, make sure you have a reliable DD to drive when the modded toy breaks, but that doesn't help you now.

While I wouldn't just pick one up at the wrecking yard and put it on, you can pick one up at the wrecking yard and have it rebuilt. $100-$200 for the head and $100 or so to go through it with $100 or so in gaskets and miscellaneous parts (depending on the extent of the damage) and you're back in business.

As mentioned...the first step is to pull the head to see the extent of the damage. It could be just a couple of bent valves to a totally destroyed head. Also as mentioned, you could have damage to the piston tops as well, or worse.

Pull the head first and go from there. And yes, 5 months is too soon for a TB to go out unless the shop A) didn't know what they were doing. B) didn't replace all the parts. C) didn't use a quality part for replacement.

A good friend of mine did the engine rebuild, he has 3 eclipses of his own that he done a lot of work on. He moved to Oregon so I can't get him to do the work again. However he was shocked as well that the belt snapped, Im sure something else caused it to snap. I know I had the a/c on and I heard a squealing noise when I pulled out from a toll, I took my foot off the gas when I heard the squeal, then put foot back on and had no power. Threw the car in netural and coasted to side of road. And what I know is dumb I tried to crank the car again before looking under the hood. Car turned over but would not crank up. I know I should have a second daily driver but cant afford two cars. City bus gets me to campus and I work on campus too so that helps. Friends car for everything else. The belt is a gates belt. Im suppose to take the car to central florida turbo Saturday to have them inspect the head and put new timing belt on, that will cost 150 plus belt cost though. Wish I new more DSM people to work on my car.

Valve clearance is so close, I don't doubt you punctured a piston. You could run compression to find out but you're going to have to pull the head anyway so, might as well get it over with. Try to find out what happened to the junk GST. Until then, enjoy the bus.

it doesnt happen often but it does happen

One(or more) thing(s) to make sure of...
1. Was the balance belt changed (if you run it)?
2. Was the auto tensioner changed?

More than 1 person has changed a TB and not the others and had a BB or tensioner take out the new job shortly there-after.

A "complete" list of parts that "should" be changed during a TB install...

But at the very minimum...TB, BB, auto tensioner and water pump.
