My engine (4G63 Lancer Evo III) is still out of the car and this evening I tried to put my timing belt on the proper way.I aligned the sprocket markings on the camgears and all other timing marks were OK.After turning the engine for 6 times (as the manual says) the marking on the gamgears is one tooth off each time.I measured the position of the piston with a micrometer,so that is rather accurate.

Help is appreciated

Sometimes they can bee a pain in the a$$. Just pull it off and try to make sure all the slack is out of the belt when you put it on. Then see what you have.

Probably not the same, I just did a timing belt job on my Eagle Talon and had the same prob. I just moved the camshaft gear that I kept missing a tooth on (the other camshaft gear didn't move so I knew which one was the issue) an made it miss a tooth on the other side of the camshaft gear that remained stationary. My problem was it kept moving when went to torque the tension pulley to set my pin and sure enough it just moved right inline and now my timing is great. This might help you I dunno never got lucky enough to get an Evo

If I'm not mistaken, the evo 1-3's were nearly the same engine as the 4g63 in the dsm. They had minor differences like manifolds and injectors, but I do know first hand that all 4g63's use the same timing belt so one would think the timing belt job would be the same.

As far as I know, the timing job on my Evo is almost the same as on the earlier 4g63 engines. We found one strange thing in the manual about the tensionroller..It says in the manual that this roller should have the two small holes to the left side of the centerbolt. If I do that, the tensionroller is hitting the waterpump..
