So my motor is a fresh rebuild with about 6-7000 miles.. popped the hood the other day to re-touque heat cycled bolts and what not.. and came across my timing belt issue. it appears the inside portion of the belt is getting worn and chewed up..any ideas why?

Did you put the plates on backward that hold the balance shaft sprocket?

That won't eat up the belt though. It also doesn't hold on the sprocket ;) It's the trigger plate for the crank sensor. If that was put on backwards, that'd most likely destroy the crank sensor far before it ate the timing belt.

Happen to have too long of a bolt in the two oil pan bolts that go through the front case?

When I was installing my timing belt I got that info from this video

^^^ problem salved, I have seen this a few times. It also comes up on the forums quite a bit a common mistake.

Don't forget that if you put the trigger plate on backwards, you're gonna trash the valves by timing the engine incorrectly.

This gets my vote

Problem is not quite solved as a 1G does not have a crank sensor down there, it runs solely off the cam angle sensor. The plate between the crank and balance shaft sprocket on a 1G serves two purposes only- one is to give you the proper reference for TDC via the notch cut into it, and the second is a guard for the balance shaft belt. Only one thing comes to mind when looking at that damaged timing belt- If you still have balance shafts, it is possible that the belt has broken and bent the plate so that the plate is now digging into the belt. I had this happen years ago and was very fortunate to catch the problem before the belt gave out.

Also, the placement of the damage on the belt is not quite correct for having a long oil pan bolt where the short one should be, but anything is possible I suppose...

i had a similar issue where i didnt have dowel pins when i put the head back on and went ahead and installed it anyway....the dowel pins will keep the head in place with added support.

I'm investigating your suggestions now..will report what I find.

Thanks for the support gentlemen. Glad I caught this early

Also..would the timing cover ..if miss aligned play a factor?

And yes the balance shafts are still there..should have removed em when It was rebuilt :-/

Oil pan bolts are correct oem size

Center /oil pan bolt coming into belt area between crank shaft and oil pump shaft- is too long...Take it out and put a fat washer under it or just a shorter bolt...very easily done from under car..

My 2 cents.

When I bought my first DSM I noticed the timing belt rode too close to the head side. Rode about 1/8 or less off the cam pullys toward the head. After doing a cam swap I finally noticed that one of the idler pulleys was on backwards. Flipped the pulley and it brought the belt back to center.

I was going to say check idler pulley as well. I blew a timing belt once because it was on backwards. I would actually go as far as taking the cover off and take a look at where broken off shavings/chunks are sitting

Are you running the top cover? I have seen the foil that is attached to the hood do damage.

No cover.and I'm getting rid of that top foil as we speak

Thanks for the info guys..ill be pulling the oil pan bolts and checking idler pully on sunday..for now she sits..I don't dare drive it till I put on a new belt and remove b. Shafts.

Quick fix I like it..hopefully that's all it is..

looks to be hitting your trigger plate by your crank shaft.. or possibly the lip on one of your pulleys...

That is exactly what I heard in the video. Thanks for the confirmation.:thumb: 3 minutes and change into the video that is mentioned and its those two plates(trigger plates) that go on each side of that gear which I could have sworn was the gear for the balance shaft belt.

Also check to make sure the timing tins aren't bent and rubbing.

Deal!

Timing plates are good and straight. All is lined up as it should..now I'm really leaning towards pan bolts..because its an intermittent rubbing pattern

Or even the damn timing cover itself! Its a crap cover.

Thanks all for your input..very much appreciated

Hey not mean to steal thread or anything but I just rebuilt the head on my car and redid the timing with all new oem and oem belt but now my new belt looks like this help!!!!! I don't have an lower or upper timing cover due to previous owner
