so ive been having problems with my timing belt the last couple weeks i have to replace it again after only 20 miles from the last one thank god it didnt rip all the way it only ripped half way wen i noticed it well anyway im haveing a problem with the belt slideing towards the motor when i have the car running the tentioner pully is on correct like its not backward but when my car is running the belt moves side to side and its either rubbing something or its catching something and i dnt know what it is please help timing belts arent cheap and im tired of replacing them

I would check the Idler pulleys, or reassemble and rotate the belt looking for the problem, I have seen knot heads that try to save money and not replace the idler pulleys and end up with belt problem and and some head work later.

Also, make sure that when you install the new TB and tensioner, that you tighten the tensioner pulley so that when you remove the tensioner pin, the plunger should not move. This way, as the belt stretches, you have plenty of tensioner.

Is the tensioner new? It should be replaced, along with all pulleys, when replacing the TB.

as of right now the tentioner is not new but it didnt move when i pulled the pin the first belt was wearing like towards the back on top of it then when i put a new belt on it ripped
im goint to replace everything timing cover to i just want it fixed bvefor it gets way to cold

o and by the way my puly is hitting the water pump what could that be

That is probably the pulley that is bad because it should not be hitting the water pump.

I said f it and ordered everthing new and went with the kevlar belt thanks for all the tips and suggestions ill keep you posted when everything gets put on

I would do it all at once you start the car and boom the tensioner breaks, change the pulleys at the same time too, i regret changing the pulleys everything esle, and wack bent valves just enough so the car wouldnt start. The engine was rebuilt last year, andi changed the belt, removed balance shafts and did not change the pulleys which sounded terrible compared to the new ones i got. I learned do it once and right, even a few miles could mean disaster, why take chances plus watch the grammar its hard to read.

If the tensioner pulley hits the water pump, rotate it so it's away from the water pump. It's an eccentric tensioner, so rotating it will move it's position.

Before you start the car, before you install the timing cover, first rotate the crank by hand and check the belt position. Make sure it tracks straight before you start it. Make sure the valves are not hitting the pistons before you start it.

Starting the engine is not a good way to find out you did it wrong.

I tried to rotate the pully but it still hit. I think the tentioner arm might be bent or something , I ordered all new pullys and tentioner so we will see what happens thanks for all the tips
This is my first dsm and first complete engine build just want it to be somewhat reliable

I just had my engine rebuilt so yea it was off y could something be wrong the machine shop put it back on not me

That could very well be your problem, A lot of people make the same mistake. There are two short bolts on the oil pan that are supposed to go in front so they don't pop all the through and hit the timing belt. If you didn't put the short bolts in the correct spots, the long bolts will wear a groove, and eventually tear the belt up.

Here is a picture of what I am talking about.

Still be sure to check that tensioner arm and pulley, if it is properly adjusted and still hits the water pump, there is something wrong, but the oil pan bolts would def tear up your timing belt, good luck.

so ive been trying to figure out what im doing wrong. so every time i put my timing belt pullies on, the front one hits the water pump and there brand new . Need help please

Did you re-use the auto tensioner, because if you did maybe it doesnt have enough push left to move the pulley out which will move the t-belt just out of the way of the water pump... just a thought

Is that even possible? Or are you talking about the pullies that bolt to the water pump? It's real easy to get one flipped over backwards. Seems like there was a real nice diagram of those posted in the "Burnette's Tip of the Day" thread.

Even when i put the pully the way that it shows in the diagram it still hits, I have a 90 TALON is the waterpump different on the 6 bolt then the 7. It seems like the water pump is to fat or something.
And are the pullys different on either motor.

Please clarify as to which pulley we are talking about and where it is hitting. Or go crazy and post a picture or two.
