Timing Belt?

front balance shaft belt. may as well put a new timing belt on. When the belt broke it probably took out the crank sensor which would shut the engine off.

I hate to bring you the bad news but that's your balance shaft belt. Its not uncommon for those to break and tangle in your timing belt, causing it to jump teeth. Since the car doesn't start I would assume the worst that the pistons kissed the valves.

just check it out. take the timing cover off and turn the crank to tdc and see if the cams are in time. if so then just replace the belts. if its i think 3 or more teeth off then its time to get the head to the machine shop with new valves. hopefully like i said, its just the belt that took out the crank sensor which killed it. itd be a lot cheaper but you have to expect the worst

You will have to take off the accessory belts and covers to get to the timing belt. the balance shaft belt is (was) behind the harmonic balancer. Here is a walk-through to get you there and what your instore for:

Maybe you got lucky and the balance shaft belt damaged the crank angle sensor causing your not start. Much easier of a fix than a rebuild.

Thanks for that, ill put it all together when I get the belt, but I just want to know how my timing looks, if its jumped any teeth, cause I did find the balance shaft belt around the timing belt area

I cannot tell from your pic if the harmonic balancer is at tdc. If it is, then you look good. See step 8 in the walk-through for a more detail on how to line up the timing marks. If you have not done a timing belt job recently, you may want to consider the whole job at this point since everything will be apart anyway.

To me it looks like the crank is at 5* after tdc and both cam marks are off. we need better views of it. my opinion is it looks like timing is off a little. but 5* after tdc will make things look off

5* is 5 degreese. if that's not what you were asking then my bad LOL. ignition timing from factory is 5* before top dead center. that looks like its 5* after tdc.

How do I get them both on time? And what cover do I need to take off

Did you at least check out the link? You are going to have to do a little reading which was provided.

loosen up the water pump bolts first. remove alternator belt, power steering belt and ac if you have it. take the 4 10mm bolts off the water pump pulleys. now take the 4 12mm bolts off the harmonic balancer where the other 2 belts were on. if it has ac then you'll need to remove the 2 12mm bolts (this is a pain in the neck to do). there are like 9 10mm bolts on the lower timing cover. remove the motor mount to get 1 10mm bot out of the middle timing cover. there are 2 10mm bolts that are on the side that also hold the top cover on. once that's out then you're at the timing belt

My advice:
Read the link.
Verify you are at TDC.
Look at timing marks on cams.
If a little off you were lucky.
If way off, head rebuild.
Complete timing belt job.

the crank has to be timed at tdc. use a ruler to check cams. correct timing dead on, ruler in both outter marks, the 2 inner marks should be just a hair under. it will not line up exact. 2 inner will be slightly below the straight line

Well since the car wont start, I would say it is safe to leave it. If you want to drive it, then you have some work to do. A haynes and Chilton manual are also very helpful.

At a bare minimum you have a timing belt job to do so you need to take the timing belt covers off. If the marks dont line up then you need to find out if you bent valves. Right now youre guessing and we are providing all the info that is relevant given what info we have. Youre going to have to get in there and report back.
