Hey folks.
I bought my car 4 years ago and have only heard it run. It ran good but had a a v8 cam sound to it (very lopey). Needless to say between buying a house and traveling for work I'm finally getting back into getting it running again, so I'm attempting a timing belt change since the one I have looks a lil shotty. Before I had bought it, the engine was rebuilt by a reputable shop here in Jersey. I had thought that it was wierd that a rebuild didn't include a new timing belt. So here I am.

I turn the car over to what I believe is TDC with the cam dowel pins at 1200 and the timing marks at 3:00 and 9:00. And of course the mark on the crank pulley is way passed the T on the cover. I turn and turn and turn the motor over and can't get the marks to even come close to lining up. I proceed with the removal of the splash shield. I had noticed right off the bat that the oil pump marks don't line up.

Again and again I turn the motor over watching the marks but to no avail, nothing lines up. From what I have read and watched all the marks should all line up. From observing the marks go around the closest I could get them was within 4 teeth on the cam gears. Here are pics of the oil pump lined up and the cam gears not lined up. WHAT GIVES?

Thank you for your time
Trevor

So with the dowel pins at 12 and the cam gear timing marks at 3 and 9 here is a pic of the crank. You can see that it could be "out of time?" but only by a couple teeth?

Thanks again

It is not lining up because it was not installed properly.

Line up the cam gears, remove the belt, rotate the crank into the proper location, reinstall the belt. It is not literally this easy but this should explain why youre marks are not lining up. Utilize the vfaq link in post #2. It will make things much easier.

This is how received the car. I haven't removed the old belt yet. Once I saw this I stopped and felt I needed to consult someone just make sure It was wrong and I was right. As in a little reassurance. So now I know. I'm also doing new cam gears while I do the belt.

Thanks to all that have helped out!!

I've done a little work here and there, stuff the previous owner hadn't done. Like bigger fuel pump, bigger injectors and such.

I work for environmental company that travels and cleans up oil and chemical spills. The biggest time restraint was the famous BP spill in the Gulf where I spent a tremendous amount of time down there. Came home and thanks to BP I bought a house and paid off all my bills. And now I'm getting to he point where I can start throwing money at here again.
