i have a 90gsx, im tryin to replace the timing belt with engine still in. i have everything off except the crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover. i have the really stiff motor mounts. the Pulley is hiting the wheel well, i have to drop the engine arbout another 2 inches. should i take out the other motor mount off? or is their an easier way to get to it?

hey man here is the link to the VFAQ where they have the best article on replacing your timing belt and related components ...i hope it helps but u have to also remove the lower splash shield to access the crank pulley ...use the link i provided it will take u step by step to ensure u do a proper job and dont mess up ok .... :D Timing Belt VFAQ (Timing Belt TSB - ENHANCED)

ive read that process several times, but the lower timing belt cover is behind the crankshaft pulley which is hitting the wheel well. ive tried dropping the lower cross member and it still didnt give me enough drop on the engine.

Have you tried taking off the driver side motor mount and jacking that side of the motor up?:sneaky:

The bolts are pretty easy to get off once you can get at them.

Take a piece of wood, put it on a floor jack and hold the engine up like that.. Take the front motor mount off (the one by the cams) then slowly lower the engine down far enough to where you can get the pully out from the wheel well.. Then youll be one your way to success muh man!!

I'm trying to figure out exactly what you're doing to be in this situation. You do realize that its only 4 easy 12mm bolts and the balancer basically falls right out, right? You don't have to do the big crankshaft bolt in the center.

Use a ratchet and extension, if you find you can't get to one of the bolts, rotate the engine around until you can.

He may have to if he's also going to do balancer belts. 21mm (7/8") impact socket is needed with an impact wrench to bust that bolt loose.

Yea, got gotta take off that lower splash shields as well so you can get to the pulley a lot easier - 10mm socket removes all of the bolts to take the shields off.

Yea, that lower cover HAS to come off - it's not the easiest, but it can be done. True, put a block of wood under the oil pan and jack it up just slightly so you can take the weight off that belt end motor mount, then remove that mount assembly completely.

Yes, thank-you. But he is trying to take off the balancer itself and the lower timing cover. For that, you don't need to take it off.

Actually, it shouldn't have to come off at all, even to do the balance shaft belts, but in any case, it has nothing to do with removing the balancer.
