my talon tsi awd's clutch recently just went out. im on a tight budget right now and i just purchased this car a day ago. labor will be covered for cheap if not anything but wanting to know what would a good, cheap clutch i could put in and not have to spend a lot. any suggestions/prices?

and also when it went out i noticed what it looked like clutch fluid on the ground, not a lot and wasnt leaking. wondering what caused that or if thats a issue or not.

If you plan to keep the car stock then you can just go with a cheap stock replacement clutch kit and have the flywheel resurfaced. If you plan on mods later save and buy a clutch for what your goals are now instead of having to do it again later.

You cant resurface our flywheel, or really its not worth the cost to have it done, just grab a fidanza they are like 79$ plus shipping.

I worked at a shop with a flywheel resurfacer and know how to do it myself. I see no reason why a factory flywheel can't be resurfaced.

You said you have fluid on the ground? Odds are it is your slave cylinder leaking.

The slave pushes the clutch fork to engage/disengage the clutch if you didn't know that already.

A bad slave will cause the car to act as if the clutch is stuck engaged... because technically it is but not because of the clutch.

You may also have a leaking master cylinder which is right next to the brake master but odds are you don't because they will almost always leak on the inside of the car as the only connection or opening where fluid could easily leak out of goes to a flare nut line.

You may also have a small hole in your hydraulic fluid lines.

Even a MINOR air bubble in the clutch system will cause the clutch to not engage properly.

Now as for the original question. Go OEM, the OEM clutch is good for 300hp AWD or 325ish FWD. The only problem with it is launching it will glaze it pretty quick.

After you replace a clutch on a DSM you want to use Jack's video on youtube. Just google Jack's transmissions clutch engagement and it should be there. With out adjusting the clutch it will likely not have the proper clutch travel.

Eh, Never mind I found it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYJxQyjIhUw

Thank you all, all you guys have been helpfull. but yea i dont know much about manual transmissions. but that makes sense, i was driving and shifing into second and the clutch pedal got stuck in and i pulled it back out. but it still had all the normal pressure on it when i pushed it in, but didnt engage. wouldnt let me go into gear. hoping its not the clutch.

If you do need a clutch, I would personally consider RRE's bobo brand clutch. It's like the ACT 2600, but easier on the car, and easier on your leg.

But I haven't heard anyone talk about it, so you should research and see what people are saying.

I've got the ACT 2600. Probably major overkill for what I'm going for anyway. Didn't know how far I would take this car at the time (regarding HP), but I think I've changed my mind.

It's probably just the slave leaking. That happened to me and I replaced the clutch - probably for nothing.

XTD. Get the stage 4 with a flywheel. Flywheel is supposed to replaced when you replace the clutch. Mitsu considers it a service item.

if you had to buy a clutch, i would have to suggest this one accually. ive had a few of them in different cars, and my gsx as well. launched the shit out of those clutches over and over again , i've broken four 3 bolts rear axles, never had a clutch problem.

Okay, if you can get it done cheaply sure resurface the flywheel, but every machine shop in my area is going to charge 50-80$ to resurface it, and xtd/act/fidanza flywheels are cheaper, and I know the fidanza has detachable friction plates which negates the need to have it stepped every-time you surface it.
