Recently I blew a seal in my turbo, and it started smoking bad, i checked my intercooler piping and sure of it, they were dripping oil.. so, with that being said i removed my turbo, and now im not sure what i should do.. According to the guy i purchased it from, he said the turbo was a 16g with a 20g compressor, well when i took it off it looked pretty small, and it says td05 which if i'm correct included all the way down to 14b's. The turbo also has a lot, and I mean A LOT, of shaft play. So my question is, should i rebuild the turbo myself with a rebuild kit which costs $50 and then balance it for around $60 at a local shop, or just save for a 20g. Also, if i was pushing around 20-25 psi with this turbo, how much would I push with a 20g?

In a tight budget situation, just go with the 14b. It will bolt right in and it will be an easy swap and you will have your car back up and running in a weekend at the most. Unless you have another DD and can have your car down for weeks while you try to save for a 16G. But keep your priorities straight, dont break the bank just because you feel you want a 16g.

I don't want it to be slower, I dont know if id go smaller than a 16g, but i'm worried about buying a used one in case it turns out like this one..

Then your only other option is to have that turbo rebuilt and call it a day. Buying another used turbo wont solve your problem ### that turbo could be junk also. SEnd it to forced performance you will spend a few bux but you will get a quality rebuild that you wont have to worry about for some time.

When the ebay 16g that came with my car started to smoke, I picked up a 14b with a chewed up compressor wheel for 75$, found a used but in good condition compressor online and replaced the bad wheel with the good wheel. Put about 5k miles on it, replaced it with a new/bigger turbo. So far that little 14b has helped 3 of my friends - they all had turbo down time for rebuilds/selling/upgrades etc - and is still in great condition.

Every dsm owner should have a spare 14b laying around :)

If the mods in your profile are correct (and I assume incompletely listed as I see no upgraded injectors/fuel pump) then I guess you could go for a 16g, but you say you're on a budget and that waiting to buy a 20g is an option? I don't know. Just keep in mind a few things, a 14b will be the cheapest and most reliable route if you're indeed on a budget, next option is 16g, but that would mean bigger fuel support if you don't yet have it, and its also going to mean more reliability issues (if you're not sure of what you're doing that is). And at last, a 20g... I mean, that doesn't really fall under a ''budget built''. So choose your poison!

I have 750cc injectors

What about this 14b it seems pretty legit, is that a good brand?
KKR 1000 RB20/RB25/14B Turbo - eBay (item 180353762553 end time Apr-24-11 19:06:34 PDT)

thats not even for a dsm. it would take a ton of modding to make that turbo fit. plus it is an external wastegate turbo so you would have to be able to support that. not a good choice. do searching in the classifieds. honestly what i would do (since you dont want to "downgrade") is just suck it up and have the 16g rebuilt.

Whats wrong with spending 50 bucks and rebuilding it yourself? Thats as cheap as it gets. You will also acquire some valuable knowledge in the process.

Yeah defiantly run away, very fast.

I have to agree that the 14b would be the cheapest and most reliable idea. Having a spare turbo around is a good idea anyway so, if it was me, I would get a 14b throw that in for the time being so you can still drive it. Then I would rebuild the 16g.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I just finished my 16g turbo rebuild. Why would anyone ever pay a shop to do that? So easy a cave man could do it.
