could any of the pullys make this problem?

could the water pump be make a knocking noise?

could it be inside my motor?

please help me asap!

tx in advance

Well pulled the head off and it was the gasket #1 hole was like half missing so i went out bought a gasket put it back on had a mechanic torque it to 65 put everything back together after getting it started it would idle real low then die found out what that was then i let it run a little bit it idled at about 1200 and then it died so i turned it back on went around the block i was in 2nd gear pulling about 4-5k rpms and i hear a bang i lose power come to a stop the car turns off start it back up starting off in first the car doesnt have power now it wont start period...

any ideas guys?

Well first of all... did you use new head bolts? Did your "mechanic" bother to check if the head or deck was warped or needed surfacing? What type of HG?

With hard to start, poor running, a bang, and then no start... and especially after removing/reinstalling the head...I would bet money that you threw your timing and maybe bent some valves... or, the HG wasn't done properly and you've blown the new one.

Sounds like you're gonna end up going back into it... hopefully nothing major though.

Well shit i did timing and when the car was runing at idle it idled fine so i think timing was good i bought a head gasket from advanced auto parts 30 bucks is that where i went wrong? i used my stock studs i told you i was on a budget so didnt have money to go get arps... i didnt take the head off fully just lifted it up off the block like 5 inches so i could slide the gasket in there

sounds to me like you blew another head gasket. If you are going to fix something on the car, do it right the first time and don't worry about it. I got my head milled and all the valves installed for $30. Cheap fixes may end up costing alot of money. I would also double check your timing. be sure the #1 piston is at TDC and all the timing marks line up correctly.

Do a compression test this time and you will see if you bent any of your valves. Also double check your timing and make sure it's dead on. To me it sounds like maybe your hydrolic tensioner failed and the timing belt slipped. I've done the whole lift head and toss in a hg and it can work but you should really pull the head on these cars to make sure the head isn't warped this can cause the hg to keep popping. Its also a good idea to clean both the head and block to make sure you get a good seal.

Most head bolts are torque-to-yield... i.e. non-reusable.

I'm afraid you're finding out the hard way the value of doing it right the first time :|

At the very least, check the head and deck for any warpage. If they are warped or not making flat smooth contact, you'll be letting heat and pressure flow over the HG...which is like putting a crack in a damn. Clean everything well (and carefully). Inspect your cylinders and valves while you're there. Get new studs... doesn't have to be top of the line stuff, but new.

Do a lot of research, and work slowly... Work smarter, not harder and more often :D

Good luck with it!

EDIT:

My typing must be getting slow in my old(er) age :)

Is the advanced auto parts gasket any good? Can i use good valves off of a diffrent head that came off my old motor? I really have no money so i have to work with what i have and need to get my car runing how would i check the #1 for the TDC? Again thanks tim!

Follow the vfaq since there are pictures there to show you what you need to see. You will need to pull the lower timing cover to check to make sure your timing is all lined up. There is a mark on your crank gear that will show tdc.

As far as the headbolts go I usually put new ones in too but just wanted to make sure there was no mis info out there. If it helps 7 bolt head bolts are torque to yield .

Well i pulled the timing belt off the cams were lined up i turned my crank and it lined up and the others lined up as well i was pulling in 2nd at about 40-50mph and i heard a pop a nd my rpm guage went all crazy going back and forth bujt i think my cluster is bad my speedometer guage does it sometimes im going to do a compression check asap to see if valves are bent or whats my problem.

Another problem i have is when coming to a stop the car turns off any ideas on that note?

I forgot to post them up earlier but here are some pics of the gasket that was on the car before i put a new one in...

do you think the head or block need some machine work?

I use the felpro head gasket and I have never had a problem with it. I have also reused Head bolts and have not had a problem with them either. Others may have different stories. Yes, you can use valves from another head as long as it is the same head as what you are using. The way I check for TDC is to line up the timing mark on the crank and put a 10" 3/8 extension into the spark plug hole on TDC. You can also use a long screwdriver. If whatever you stick down in the hole hits the piston, more than likely, you are at TDC. If the crank lines up with the timing mark, you should be TDC anyways. When I was low on money trying to rebuild a motor, I reused alot of parts. It never hurt anything. I have actually lightly buffed the surface of the block and head with a buffing tool. It did just fine. Even though your timing marks line up, check your CAS (cam angle sensor). I have mine almost turned all the way to the right. When you were driving it, did you feel and excessive vibration or was it hard to get up to speed? If so, you may have your BS and your oil pump out of timing with each other.

Man You did not put the new head gasket on over that mess. Both head&block have to be clean enough to eat your lunch off them before installing a new gasket. Any bit of the old gasket is a spot where the new gasket might blow no matter what gasket you use.

Ive got rain in my place today so tomorow if its nicer im going to check the TDC and hopefully its lined up then im going to check my cams and hope they line up there wasnt any vibration when i was driving the car i came to a stop sign and went about 10 then shifted into 2nd and i was punchin it in 2nd gear and i heard a pop and felt like i lost all the power and i came to a stop the car shut off i turned it back on and the care barely wants to pull and my guages went crazy but i think that my cluster is just bad... i have another head and it was rebuilt so the valves and everything is about 500 some miles old

Tim the Cam Angle Sensor is that the one thats by the valve cover that goes into it? How would i check it and how do i turn it?

Its all stock i never tempered with boost i dont have an aftermarket boost guage so i couldnt tell you for sure.

The CAS, will it cause the car not to start sometimes?

Thanks AGAIN Tim when this rain goes away im going to check timing see if im at TDC then im going to put my old CAS back in and see if that takes care of it
