O.k. I went to the track and crushed a couple of lifters, no biggie, they were old anyways. So I put the big bores in, after I bled them down as told by jackson auto, I put them in and THEY tick. I know they have to pump up and all, But i've driven them for a while now and they still make noise. So I called Jackson and the woman there told me it's cause I'm running 272's. She said that I have to redo all my valvetrain geometry, and mill the bottom of the lifters to make up for the cams. In a way I understand what she meant in that the cam, because of the increased lobe lift, could bottom the lifter in it's body. Makes sense, but I've never heard of this, and why isn't there more mention of it in the community. Has anyone heard of this, Is familiar with this, or has had personal experience with it. I need to know if this is common and if I need to take the head off, AGAIN, and bring it to the machine shop with the cams. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks. :dsm:

Then the person you spoke to is retarded. Swapping in new-style HLAs does not change your valvetrain geometry and should be 100% compatible with any cam you throw on there. Now if they were solid lifters, then yes, you would have to adjust them, but HLAs are self-adjusting. I personally have the 272s and the newer style OEM lifters which have never "ticked" and run fine to 8K RPM.

When you say you "crushed' your old HLAs what do you mean by that? Is it possible you may have bent a valve(s) and/or jumped time on the timing belt? Both scenarios would cause a ticking sound due to the valve hitting the piston top :dsm:

I went to the track and when I ran, on my last run I rev'd a little higher than my previous runs (thats another story all together), And when I got back to the pits, I heard the lifters ticking. I've had this car a long time and am quite familiar with this sound. When I disassembled the head to install the 3g one's, I found the two lifters that had made sound. (the last one in cyl. 3 and the first one in cyl. 4 looking back from the cam gears). I do not believe I hit valves because my vacuum readings are normal, and the car makes really good power. Also, my compression is 190-200 Psi across the board. I had never heard of having to mill the lifters...EVER! So when I heard this, I was like "what?". But what do I know, I'm just a guy. I haven't check'd the timing belt, but the tension is good and I run a kevlar belt (power enterprises) and to my understanding even jumping one tooth won't immediatly bend a valve, even with big cams. Thats what I heard, and I know my piston to valve clearance has some room. I mean, If something like that happen'd, It'll get fixed you know. Oh and by the way I run an open downpipe, and dump tube, and I can hear them ticking.

Edit: make that compression 175 psi, the last time I checked compression the motor was still hot. I just did it now with the motor cold, and it was 175 across the board. I'd say no bent valves

edit: how long should it take for them to pump up? It looks as though they might not yet have pumped up. Is it a mileage thing or what?
