This is a question for people running wideband. What aft are you reading after start up. Reason I ask is cause I think I'm kinda rich on start up and I want to adjust it before I do some motor damage.

I don't have a wideband, and i may be wrong, but i thought the car runs rich on start up until the engines warms up.

How would running rich for 3-5 min cause engine damage? My WB always reads rich at start up idle. Then goes to stoich hunting when I drive off.

I run as rich as 11:1 for about 30sec, then it steadily climbs to stoich in about 2-3 minutes time, depending on the ambient temperature.

Cylinder wash can occur if the car is running too rich. Too much fuel can thin or completely remove the oil film from the cylinder walls, leading to excessive wear.

Makes sense but I would think that would be at mixtures of well below what any wideband can read. Almost a stuck fuel injector situation.

cars have what you call a closed parameter and an open parameter. when you are running on an open parameter, such as a cold start, pure gas is pushed into the engine to keep it runnig. emission controls arent used, causing a rich start up. when your vehicle gets up to operating temp, the computer recognizes this and then your vehicle is in a closed parameter.

my car used to idle fine when it was a cold start up, but then would idle at about 3k after it was warm. it turned out the coolant sensor was shot, causing the car not to close the loop (parameter). after i replaced that it ran fine.

Don't worry about what the last guy said, you're fine.... move on. :thumb:

i wasnt saying that he was having any issues. i was explaning as to why he has a rich cold start, just like everyone else.

i was just explaing an issue that i had with my car, incase anyone else had the same thing happen to them.

Yeah like everyone else is saying, your not going to wash anything by running rich for a few minutes, you'll be perfectly okay.

Pretty sure we could call this one resolved.

o ok i just didn't know why you were stating the problem you had. I do know why the car runs rich at at start-up i was just making sure mine wasn't running extra rich.

nahh your fine, as long as it doesnt stay that way once it is warmed up.
