This is probably really simple, however, how do I tell if I have 1G or 2G motor. I've never worked on one of these before so its very strange to me

The 4G63 engine comes in two varieties, and they're distinguished by the number of bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank. The older six-bolt block had thicker rods and some other internal differences. The seven-bolt block replaced it sometime around mid-1992 build date.

If you have a 95-99 non-turbo DSM, this information does not apply. There is no six-bolt/seven-bolt distinction on the 420A motor. The same holds if you have a 1.8 SOHC motor.

But if you have a 2.0 DOHC 4G63 motor, read on...

If your car is a 90 or 91 and has its original motor, you have a six-bolt motor.

If you car is a '95 or newer turbo car, you have a seven-bolt motor.

Only 1Gs had the 1.8L option, so if the engine in question has a single cam gear/sprocket, it is a 1G engine or a 4G64 from a 2G. Only 2Gs had the 420A, so if the timing belt is on the passenger side of the car and the transmission on the driver side, it is a 2G engine. The 4G63 engine is not so easily differentiated.

For the 4G63 (2.0L DOHC), count the number of bolts connecting the transmission to the block that thread into the block; this disregards the bolt that threads into the transmission. On a 1G engine, there will be only three bolts. On a 2G, there are four. The attachments below should help; the bolts holes are circled in black. The first is a 1G engine (6-bolt in this case, but a 1G 7-bolt layout is no different) and the second is a 2G. Please excuse the 2G carnage. You will note the additional "web" of material on the 2G engine.

Thnx everybody, this was helpful since I dont know anything about these motors. My motor is 1.8L. The original engine was swapped out for a '93 DSM motor our of an eclipse form that year. It should be a fun learning experience as I work on it.
