Thermostat temp questions

The 160* thermostat is really only useful if you are running a full stand-alone system like megasquirt. This way you can alter the parameters so the ECU knows this is your full operating temperature range. The stock ECU runs everything in a "safer" mode for the engine when the temps are too cool. For anyone running an ATX, the TCU will NOT let the car go faster than 70mph in 3rd gear and will prematurely shift it into overdrive (regardless if the OD switch is on or off). The TCU needs to see the coolant temps reach 175* before it considers the transmission warmed up. Using the 160* thermostat will cause this problam right way.

If you are running the 180* thermostat (sold at autozone.com or special ordered at their stores) is the lowest I would recommend. I also don't suggest wiring your cooling fans up to the ignition while using the 180* thermostat because once the thermostat opens, it dips below 175*, which you'd hate to happen while at the track (trust me...it sucked). The best choice if you prefer to have a cooler temp range is the 180* thermostat and a cooling fan controller which you can trigger to come on at aroun 190-195* instead of the factory set 205*. This should keep your temps between 180-195* which is as low as I would suggest.

Jamie has on here a while if I remember correctly, just under a different name. Nice to see you chime in on the subject. How would you wire up the cooling fan controller to switch on at an earlier temp like you said and where would you get one from?

I decided to go with the 180. For anyone else who may be interested.

Stant part #: 13788

btw: Thanks for that info Jamie I did not know that at all.

No, that part number is only for the 420A Eclipse. However, I am sure there are plenty of part numbers already posted for other thermostats for the 4G63 -- search around and you'll come across it.
