Hey guys, ive searched but couldnt find any good info.

My girlfriend just got an eclipse GS and it was previously turbocharged, the turbo has been removed.

It has a built engine with forged pistons and eagle rods 8.6 compression. Ive heard forged pistons arent the best thing to run on a street car, will this become a problem?

The fuel pump thats in it is a walbro 255, It seems to be running too rich as it will backfire sometimes (no cat) but the plugs indicate a lean condition? I'd like to know if a pump from my 2G turbo AWD will swap in and be more suitable for it? Or anyone wanna trade for a stock NT fuel pump?

The car seems to be running hotter then I think it should, I datalogged it and when the fan turned on it was about 215* the needle showed it not even half way on the temp gauge. The previous owner had removed the larger fan, and moved the smaller fan to the drivers side of the radiator to make room for the turbo, should i try to find the large stock fan? OR can I put the drivers side (a/c) fan from my turbo car on it?

Finally has anyone datalogged their 2gnt and if so can you tell me how hot/cold your car usually runs? THANKS

p.s. if anyone local to everett wa, wants to trade a 2.5" cat/catback for a stock setup let me know PM.

well first off, forged pistons are fine(I run 8.6:1 myself in the turbo neon, but compression that low makes the car sluggish NA, I would reccomend putting the turbo back on), if your plugs say you are lean then your lean, not rich, backffiring has several cause, what are the plug symptoms? they should be a nice golden brown color at stoich, my turbo neon runs consistent 200-210 degree temperatures....same as when it was NA...those temps seem fine to me, but I would suggest the stock fan myself, modified fans tend to cause insufficient cooling, I know since when I did the 2.4 swap in my neon I tried to remove one of the fans to save space and the thing would try to overheat at a stop until I put the other fan back in, now I know my neon isnt a 420A motor, but its a closely related 2.4L DOHC chrysler motor that has the exact same attributes my DOHC 2.0L 4DRE had(some people insist the neon has a 420A, it doesnt, its the same motor with a reversed head and some other differences, but still a different motor)

Just a thought, but did you think of doing an engine swap? I mean if she isn't going to use the built motor to its potential, its a bit of a waste IMO, and N/T motors aren't too hard to find. Also a motor swap would return the compression to stock, and take all the guesswork out of tuning the motor, as you could go by the manfacturer's specs and bring it all back to stock. Selling a built 2GNT motor shouldn't be too difficult, but then again I don't know what the demand is like in your area. :dsm:

thanks for the info about your neon! The car seems to run around 185ish degrees cruising but when stopped or slow speeds it heats up to 210-215ish. We are gonna go look at wrecking yards for a stock fan to put back on it.

I also noticed the other day when i was datalogging it at idle that the timing was pretty low, usually around 1-2 degrees, is that normal??

The o2 sensor has thrown a CE light saying "conditions too rich (o2 sensor bank 1)" but the plugs when i pulled them were pretty white.

When I compression tested it the car pushed 185psi on all four cylinders; so its really not too bad as my esi with a stock block pushes 195 on all four. I will be keeping my eye out for a spare engine since I now will be taking care of two of these cars.

Their is no point at putting a turbo back on it (we purchased it with the turbo already off) as it would cost her a lot to put one on (she doesnt have the $$) and it would be wasted as she doesnt race or drive fast.

thanks for the help!

i have had more luck with by passing the original fans and putting them on switch it keeps the car nice and cool

the temps are fine. the thermostats are 210* so the fans coming on at 215 sounds right.

the car comes stock with 2 fans. one is for actual cooling the engine, and the other only comes on when the A/C is used. if it has A/C, replace the fan. If it doesn't. then don't worry about it.
The driver side fan is the one that does the engine cooling.

stock, these engines only have about 115 WHP (brand new) with 9.6:1 comp.
8.6:1 is only going to be around 90 WHP. god... that would be horrible. Prius's would probably be faster LOL.

backfires are often because of running rich; unburnt fuel in the exhaust (happens a lot in boosted cars after being at full boost and quickly letting off the gas, where at full boost you're running a rich AFR because of boost).
get a stock fuel pump, the 225 is likely overpowering the stock injectors. (assuming they are stock. Do you know if they are? Does the car have any kind of tuning on it?)

If it was boosted, likely those injectors aren't stock. this would also cause rich conditions.

pull out the upstream 02 (the one in the downpipe) and check it (for rich conditions evidence)
Also, with no cat, it can sound like a backfire without actually being a backfire. Some small pops on decel are normal.

Why are you replying to a post from 2005............................................

shit... it was in the recent reply's... i didn't check the OP date. blame sickasset for bringing it back from the dead v_v
