I'm an old conservative patient type and intended to upgrade my Talon after it wore out.
After 183,000 miles my patience wore out.

Hmmmm, torque is good. Now I don't need patience for the torque to come for my 2.3L.

Hey the evo is going to happen right now and I need a car so I'm looking at 97-99 gsx's.

A lot of the gsx have been stock with 90k+ miles on the motors. Do these engines/trannys last much longer than that?

MY colt has 296,000 miles on a stock never opened bottom end, (head was freshened up 80,000 with stock parts) car runs 27psi on a 60-1 pump gas everyday driver.
A car we work on 90 awd (I think this is right? SHOOTOUT SA winner 2003 2005 runner up 2004) has 260,000 on the motor 180,000 on the turbo last time car was on the track it went 12.49@ 110mph small 16g . So I guess you would say they can last? Ofcourse there is the 80,000 bombs. it all in how you care for your car. IMHO

Truthfully if you're not in hurry or need a car right now I would suggest picking up one that has minor motor damage (or no motor at all) and either build the 2g 7-bolt (some would say stay away from the 7-bolt, but others say they're strong engines) or look for a 6-bolt and build that. If you just looking for a fun DD (probably won't last long till you get bit by the turbo bug) then I'd say a 90k shouldn't be to bad, mine is about that. Pull of the intake tube, check the turbo for shaft play (try to move it up/down/left/right and in/out) if you hear lifter tick you can ask anyone on here, that's normal, it can be remedied by 3g lifters. But don't be in a hurry, like I was, I wound up paying way to much.

When you get it, change all fluids, your belts (including timing even thought its a PITA) replace your filters (you may want to upgrade to a K&N for the air filter) basic maintenance stuff.

My hope is to buy one that I don't HAVE to drop a new motor/tranny into. I don't want to drop a new tranny/motor in it, only if my options/plans change. I need the car within the next month, sis is getting my gayrus, and I love driving. Reason I want to buy a good condition one is I want to start saving for the evo right away... Yeah I know, call me a spoiled, dumb ####, but you don't how much I'm obsessed with the nine. In a few years I won't have any chance in buying an unmolested one

Here is a 99 GSX (96k miles, $8600)

He offered to drive it to town so I could look at it. Judging from the info he has, is it worth it? My friend Ronnie (dsm buff) says it is really nice, but Jake (hater of everything better than his) says ground zero club guys have junk.

Well if you're so obsessed with the Evo, I'd say buy a $500 Honda, get good gas millage, then you;ll have more money for your evo, just a suggestion.

Thinking about picking this car up

1995 Eagle Talon TSI AWD 5 Speed Completely Stock. Owner says there are absolutely NO PROBLEMS with it.

has 142,000 Miles on the Odometer, owner says timing belt was done just before he bought it at 130,000 Miles, also its a southern car so there isnt rust!

How much is this car worth? what would you pay?? what should i pay??? (assuming the compression test checks out) He is asking 4,000 for it. THANKS :thumb: If i buy it i will be the Fourth owner....

Hello, I'm New to the dsm scene. I've been reading a lot about the cars the past few weeks. And I'm pretty excited to get involved. I'm going to look at this car tomorrow:
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/car/466241245.html
which is this car:
http://www.sacramento-dsm.com/garag...e&CID=11&sid=474410bd288b77988320c157b3de9483

Looks to be a pretty bad ass car and well worth it from what I can tell. Hopefully all is as it seems and I'll be purchasing the car tomorrow. What do you guys think? Anyone seen this car around or know anything about it? I look forward to learning about these cars more and playing/tuning and all that other fun stuff.

-James

this looks like a good car to start with, and its also really really clean. I say do it, and its a good start for the DSM world you will now be in for the remainder of your life. Welcome.

Well.. The car I went and looked at wasn't really what I expected. other than a few minor cosmetic things that I won't get into, It just wasn't inpressive as far as power, and the cars owner had trouble getting it into gear. It ran poorly, he said it was because of the moates chip needing to be re-burned..
But I'm going to continue looking around. One just popped up on the classifieds here that is close to me, and looks to be an amazing deal. Hopefully I can go look at the car tomorrow, if the seller emails me or calls me. I hate it when people dont post their phone number in classified ads :(. Id go look at the car tonight and buy it if its everything it should be.

That's what I expected, you can get a fully built DSM for $7k as he refer to it as. Right from the start I knew he didn't put $25k into that car and it isn't fully built. It has no internal work done to the engine and it looks like he overplay the car doing stuff not need to it.

He is a true BSer that plays people and the only reason he's selling it is because it would cost a couple of thousand dollar to repair it.

DSM can get horrendous power but it's a very delicate car. Any mishap and you can kiss you money goodbye. You shouldn't go straight off and buying a built DSM. You should go with stock and slowly build it as you want it and get used driving it and how much you can push it to rather than buying a fully built one and knowing nothing of it and testing it until it's gone too far.

I'm thinking about selling my car and am wondering how much to sell it for? First off its a 1995 Eagle Talon. It has big 16g, ssac frountmount, 2100 act clutch, 50,000 miles on a jdm motor, Greddy type S, SS O2 housing with external dump, 3" megan downpipe, 3" Apexi exhaust, Dejon air intake, 17" chrome rims and a 2 year old paint job. What do you guys think I should sell it for?

Its not a classified ad! I am just asking everyones opinion on what a fair price is for the mods. I never said it was for sale, Its not yet. Thats why it is in this forum. So keep em coming.

Thats too bad. It looked decent from the links. But you're doing the right thing in being patient and not buying something you're not completely happy with. Just be patient and the right DSM will come along.

Happy searching! :thumb:

why buy someone's work? built it your self.

Assuming the previous owner was competent and knew what he was doing, buying an already modded car will be a hell of a lot cheaper than building it yourself. Again, thats a big "if" assuming that the previous owner did the needed maintenance first, didn't half-ass any of the work, didn't abuse the car, etc.
