greetings all,
My name is Martin, I come from New Zealand, and drive a Mitsubishi Eterna ZR-4 which is the hatch-back variant of the Galant VR-4. The good thing is that these cars are blessed with mitsu's JDM spec 6bolt 4g63 and 14b turbo.
I have a few questions in regards to the 14b, and 16g turbos.....
The 14b recently seized, and i have replaced it with a 16g that came out of a mitsi lancer evo 2. I teared down the seized 14b today, and found alot of coking which seemed to have locked it up. The metal plate that sits between the core and the turbine wheel had a chunk missing out of it from the centre, i'm not sure if this is due to excessive shaft play...Any ideas??
The 16g i recently installed in my car seems to work well, however it appears that oil is getting past the turbine and compressor wheels.....I also know my engine is all original, and is need of a rebuild, as it has a bad blow-by issue (lots of smoke coming out of the breather pipe, especially when boosting) Does anyone know if bad blow-by would cause this problem with my turbo?
I am going to be rebuilding my 14b core, but am pondering converting the core to 16g. I have read the vfaq on turbo rebuilds, and from what i gather by getting a 16g rebuild kit, i should be fine. My question is would i have to replace all the bushings and bearings with new ones that come in the kit? The old ones look OK they would just need some cleaning up... Can i not just get the required parts (16wheel, centre section etc) to turn my old 14b in to a 16g, get it all balanced and re-assembled and have at it?
Thanks for any help people, and sorry for the long post.
