Tcu tune?

Hello everyone and sorry if this is a basic or dumb question, i'm not very car smart yet.. this is my second tsi awd talon. (1992) and i picked it up for 300$ the guy who sold me it told me i needed a tcu tune. he said if i drive it or anything i could have a detonation in one of the cylinders. So the car has just been sitting. should i buy a stock basic tcu, or how would one go about getting a tune? cheepest option would be greatful!

Tcu is for the automatic transmission, not for the engine. You can tune a tcu for different shift rpms and what not, the ecu is what you tune for engine functions. I think you mean ecu.

car does drive but the tcu is messed up and its not letting the Trans act right but the Trans is fine.
with the motor bring under boost it could ruin something if the car messed up. That is why the car needs tuned. If the tcu was tuned right the car would be perfect. The tcu I got was for a Trans that was all built up and had racing parts and mine does not.


That was the guys direct message so this is referring to the tcu, however i don't know if he means ecu or tcu, you guys are the experts here so please tell me where to go from here thanks

I would sooner say that the transmission is going out and the seller wants you to think that its something cheap and easy instead of a transmission. Very few tuned tcu's are out there, it would have to be an eprom tcu to start with. Pull your tcu and take the top off and post a picture of the board up so that we can see if it has an aftermarket eprom in it. Even a reprogrammed tcu should work fine with a stock transmission that is in good shape and the way it sounds is like your transmission is slipping which is not because of a tune.

Op,With your vague description,I'm 99% certain your actually talking about the ecu needs a tune.In your last post you say if the car goes under boost it could mess something in the engine up..Soo my opinion would be to start figuring what mods are done to the car.Pull the ecu Which should be in an upright position behind the radio pocket.Much easier to get in there going thru the passenger side carpet there..So pull the ecu to find out if the ecu is an eprom..You will allready have the mods written down at this point..So then your next step is to fix what the previous owner didnt do.So you take your mod list,Get ahold of an eprom maker.Have a custom tuned burned,possibly a socket job,put in the new chip, bamm your done with that.

And to elaborate.The tcu's tuned shift points has absolutly nothing to do with the motor detonating..

Thanks! So if the trans is slipping, would it be okay to drive? i have a awd tsi parts car with a 5 speed tranny i can swap anytime into. i just wanted to drive the car, and not ruin the engine. and i will get a pic of my tcu

Do the blue wire mod utilizing a toggle switch or get a TCU chip that will firm up the shifts. Firmer shift pressure will reduce slippage.

But as everyone else in here has stated, I think you may be confusing TCU with ECU.

It can still be drivin if its slipping.Its not gonna last long and slip worse over time but can be drivin..Are you not used to an auto and the stock soft/ long shifts make you think its slipping?

As far as swapping the trans over to a 5 speed,as well as the rear diff.Thats really up to you as the driver..If you like to drive a 5 speed, then theres your answer.

Kinda sorta..You can get a non eprom converted ECMTuning, Inc.

Buy an eprom ecu and have it socketed and replaced the caps ECMTuning, Inc.

Then youll need this to laptop tune ECMTuning, Inc.

op does your car shift through the forward gears on its own or manually, you may just have a bad tcu that needs replaced. if they go bad the car will feel horribly slow and be stuck in 3rd as the only forward gear(limp mode). I have had 3 automagics that i bought stuck in limp mode.
