surges while driving and hard to start

i just got a 90 eagle talon tsi. when i was driving at like 60 it would die then kick back on again in like a secound. like i said i just got it and i dont know where to start. also itll run real lean then real rich and it is kinda hard to start after its warm.

im used to working with older v8s so this is a first.

any help would be great
 
Are you driving at a steady speed (60mph) or are you accelerating under boost when it cuts out?

Some things to check:
- Fuel - pump could be bad, filter clogged, gas contaminated
- Air - Boost leaks post turbo, bov not rerouted to intake, intake tube btw MAS and turbo loose.
- Spark - ECU/MPI Relay bad, battery/alternator voltage low, plugs not right type/gap or fouled

ok i fixed it. all i did was put a new o2 sensor and i got rid of the filter screen things on the mass air flow sensor, new plugs and fresh fuel. works great now. thanks alot though.
 
Cool. BTW the lower screen removal is an old-school mod to delay fuel cut by promoting more airflow away from the metering area in the MAF. It will also lean your AFRs slightly (which is not to big a deal as the 1Gs stock we are set to 9.5:1).

The screen in the center actaully serves the purpose to straighten airflow thru the metering section so should be left installed.
 
um well i kinda brok it so where should i get a new screen at. the car works great right now without it after i took every thing apart and cleaned it.
 
My are is having some symptoms. While I am driving sometimes the check engine light comes on and when it does my stock boost gauge goes dead and the car boggs at 3k RPM. Then when I beat on the car the check engine light goes off and the boost gauge comes on and the car is normal. The car also wont boost past 7lbs. Is the turbo causing all of this problem? Is the turbo locking up or something. Any help would be great thanks.
 
as im driving my 1990 eagle talon tsi awd it will be running pefectly fine and then all the sudden it will start chogging and blowing white smoke. then it will die and take about 10 minutes to get it to restart. i need this car to work for tommaro. no check engin lights come on when it dose this though.
 
have you done a boost leak test? any fluids acting strange(did you check your coolant levels? what about oil?) any coolant in your oil or oil in your coolant?
have you pulled you spark plugs to check if any are wet?

ok i fixed it. on the fuel end of the fuel rail there is the fuel pressure regulator. well gas was just poring out of it so i replaced the seal and it works great now and the smoke was because i had to throttle it to keep it running. so it was raw fuel. thanks alot though.

You're very lucky your car didn't burn to the ground. Glad you were able to fix it!
 
yeah im glad to cause it was right by the distribitor. i was wonderin why my gas was goin down so much untill i was changin my plugs and saw that leak
