Stuck in 4th, what could it be?

Thought maybe a clutch spring popped out or something. Pulled the tranny and clutch was okay. Can't move the transmission to any gear and it's stuck in 4th. I've never rebuilt a tranny or even torn into one. What could be the cause? Shift fork maybe? If so, is it possible to change out just the shift fork? I'm just taking a guess. Thanks.

Yes, you can change just the shift fork. Be sure that your hydrolic clutch system is bled too. it could cause you to be stuck in a gear as well. Have a friend help you bleed it and see if that fixes it. It may also be that your master or slave cylinder has gone bad and prevents your clutch from fully disengaging.

I had two transmissions get stuck in 4th. Both times the shift fork was broken. The broken fork can get caught in the gears and the tires can suddenly lock up, it happened to me trying to drive the car. Your best bet is to get it rebuilt by someone unless your very comfortable with your mechanical ability.

I agree with NC, the shift fork is most likely the issue, only way of knowing for sure is tearing it apart. If you're comfortable with taking it apart and are fairly mechanically inclined go for it. If the fork looks good you might want to investigate the slider or the shift rail interlock.

Well, it's not the slave cylinder. The tranny is off the car and can't change the gears by hand. I can spin the shaft that the tob is on by hand but I can't shift the gears. I'd like to give it a shot to try and change it...being that I prefer doing as much as I possibly can myself. Just dunno if there's any special tools I'd need though. Hoping not. And hoping it's a relatively easy part.

I was at the track when it happened and was my last run of the day. Had I heard a pop when I went to shift gears. I coasted halfway down the track and when it went into gear, it stayed there (in 4th) but was in the 3rd gear position. Odd. Won't come out of gear.

Okay well looking on the Vfaq and it only shows the rebuild for the awd tranny. Is there much of a difference between the fwd and the awd? Just wanna make sure I'm not f'in anything up when I start tearing into this thing....probably later tonight.

P.S. Thanks for the feedback.

Broke an ear off the shift rail :( Have to get another and change it. Fun fun. Wish it was a shift fork. It would've been cheaper.

If you haven't ordered your parts yet try San Rafael Mits, i just ordered the 5/R rail, 3/4 rail, 4th gear fork, the rail interlock, interlock pin and the rol pins, my local dealer price was over 250, i got everything shipped for $103 and some change. The rails were a little less than 30. i forgot to look where you are, but sometimes i order from Ricart Mits or Mentor Mits, where if you were local to either they have great prices and ya could pick them up. I would give you the part numbers for the rails but the fwd are a half inch shorter than the awd. If you still need any pictures differentiating the two tranny's let me know, i have an awd im puting back together tomorrow and a fwd i have open on the bench.
