Stripped exhaust manifold studs

Hey everyone,

To those who have stripped threads while taking the exhaust manifold off; which studs did you use when you retapped to a bigger stud? stock is i think 8Mx1.25 - can someone confirm this as well.

Where did you get these from?

I would never ever ever ever use stainless studs on anything exhaust wise ever again. I used the SS studs that FFWD sells and when I took them out the threads messed up and wrecked my ported turbine housing. Stainless steel is too soft of a metal IMO to use for something that gets heat cycled that much. Heat treated studs would probably be the best to use for our studs.
 
Read what ssstuds.com has to say about studs made with stainless 300. It's pretty much a direct stab at ffwdconnection and slowboy racing. Not sure about how true it is though. Meh, do what you will. As for me, I'm going to try them out. I've broken 5 stock studs now, thankfully none of them had to be helicoiled.

I just ran into this problem this afternoon, boy oh boy...it sure is frustrating :mad: (an emotional description) if not just a slight unexpected obstacle in the course. Its actually that one stud hole, not the ones that are fixed into the head. I want to try and heli-coil it, just like I did my transmission mount bolt holes. It seems that every time I have to pay somebody to do work on my car it comes back with more mistakes than how I left it.

Is it possible to heli-coil the bolt hole and still use the stock stud? The stud itself is ok, just the bolt hole was stripped during my last turbo upgrade and the mechanic didnt tell me. WTF is up with some of those guys? Let me know what you think. Summer school starts Monday and this unexpected course of events just put me behind. Should I tap the hole the original size or use a slightly larger tap and high grade bolt? Larger being more wide. Will the heli-coil allow for the torque spec. of 22ft.lbs? (as per Haynes)

Did you have the turbo to manifold bolts or the head to manifold studs?

I had the manifold to turbo bolts. I don't know how good the head to manifold would work but I wouldn't use bolts in there ever. Keep studs because you do not want to thread and un-thread a bolt in the head too many times.
 
stainless steel isn't the strongest it just wont rust but when around heat it gets soft and will start to tarnish

i recommend using grade 8 steel studs and putting a VERY little anti seize on them i've had mine on and off alot for about 3 years and tehy are still fine and look great. may not look pretty to all of you but it works take my work. mine are still tight and hold up great buti'm around a great fastner place (metro bolt and fastner) so it easy for me to get these. most auto stores have them as well. Don't go through the dealershp tis retarded.

kazzam get a helicoil set like talontsiawd1992 said put them in watch out for the bottom center one its right in front of the oi gally/drain from the head. and you don't want shavings in there, don't torque them down to a million ft/lbs i put the stud in take 2 bolts tighten them against each other and and put teh stud in snug yet tight, put the manifold on and always use washers.
