SO here is the situation. My 90 talon awd is making a strange ticking noise.Granted it had 180xxx miles I assumed it was a bad cv axle so i replaced both sides and still it is here. It sounds like it is literally coming from inside my dash. It isnt there sitting still only while car is driving. It picks up with speed and stays consistent.

I am now assuming it is a bad speedo cable! what do you guys think? had any issues like this?

it could be Speedo cable. I had noisy ones on older civics and a miata and it sounds really scary if you don't know what it is.

Probably the cable if not the speedometer itself, I have replaced both for that problem before. They usually only act up when its super cold out.

thats the only thing i can think of. I am not looking forward to ripping the dash apart but the noise needs to stop. Ive heard some people say you can grease the cable and it will fix it? should i try this or just replace it.

hey moto, how would i know if the speedometer itself is bad? it is steady and smooth acceleration on the gauge, no jumping or moving.

I don't know about dedicated speedo cable lube. But I do know that powersport places sell cable lube, for throttle and clutch cables on bikes and quads. They come with a special squirter tip that inserts in the end of the cable and you basically just keep dumping it in until you see it come out the other end of the cable.

I saved a set of e brake cables on my jeep with this stuff when I wasn't in a position to replace them right away.

I always had the noise happen from worn gears so I doubt lube would fix that. if you're going to have it all apart you may as well replace it.

If its not jumping then its probably just the cable.

played with it today and noticed it got quieter so i went ahead and ordered a new cable. Might but some white face gauges for the hell of it
